They are classics, but also on trend now. I think they look good with almost anything, but in particular classic modern styles.

Julie, I am seeing mixed media trench coats this Fall. Check out the Sam Edelman Double Breasted Wool Inset Trench Coat and The Burberry Brit 'Crofton' Leather & Twill Trench Coat at Nordstroms for examples. (Sorry having trouble with linking to these).

Of course a classic taupe, tan, or black will always look classic and cool. It's good to get one that compliments your natural coloring.

I think taupe, tan and black work well. A red one may also be fun.

I just got a black one. My personal preference when it comes to trench coats are neutral colours. I like black or beige (a good beige) best, but I saw a military green one that was quite nice. Navy would be OK too.

If you are just adding one to your wardrobe I would be inclined to say make it a neutral as it's a classic item. Brighter colours can be added in other trendy coats. However, just to be awkward, I find myself hankering after a purple trench

Hi Diane , I like bright colors. I love the trench coat style of Kate Middleton. She look very stylish and stunning in the trench coat and her trench coat colors also to pretty.

If you love brighter shades, have a good look at what colour clothes you will be wearing the coat over and try to pick out a colour that would compliment them. Rich deep tones like deep emerald, purple, teal, plum, would all be classy shades. I think you need to try a few on to be honest.
