Thanks for the Ariat endorsement, cynthiawalkersmith! Durability and comfort rank highly with me. FWIW, I can vouch for Sebago based on the same criteria. (Bought a pair of lace up ankle boots from them this summer and they are as fine as any shoe I've owned.)
I hear you, Jules, re: the buckles and things. It's typical for me to steer clear of doodads (shoedads?) but ankle buckles are almost ubiquitous this year, right? I've surprised myself by not minding them some of the time, like on this pair of Aquatalias.
