I think the Massimo, the Midtown and the Blondo look dressiest but it all boils down to the fit.

The ones without straps and buckles are sleeker IMO. I don't think any of them aren't sleek, though. I don't know much about some of the brands; however, I would choose Ariat over Nine West any day. Ariat makes a good boot; I find them to be comfortable, durable, and bonus points for being stylish too. Seriously, loved my Ariat boots and was sad when I had to retire them almost 15 years after I bought them (retired because my feet got longer, not because the boots died).

The Timberland is the only one I wouldn't call sleek. Of course, it will depend on fit too.

Fit will tell. You have to try them on. Detailing and leather texture also makes a difference, with simple and smooth reading more sleek than distressed and loaded with hardware.

I think the Ariat Midtown and the Nine West Legretto look the sleekest. I'm judging based on how close the fit looks, and the lack of buckles. I agree with what Suz says, too.

eta: I don't think these picks are quite as sleek as what Angie was suggesting. I can see them working with sweater dresses quite nicely, though.

Sleek boots will fit your calves without a gap as well as be a nice softt smooth leather/fabric without lots of stuff on them. You really can't tell until you try them on.

Interesting that the ones with ankle straps read dressier to me somehow, I think because they emphasize the ankle? However I can see I'm alone in this so will have to rethink my idea of a
dressy-for-me tall boot
I do agree with the others, fit is the main thing for sleekness. Especially for wearing with skirts, I think.

I agree with the others that sleekness comes down to fit. For a sleek fit, I'm always pretty critical of the fit through the ankle, where many tall boots end up looking bulky or wrinkly.

For an example, these boots of mine from S. Weitzman are very sleek because of the stretchy back panel -- they fit close to the leg all the way through.

The second pair, my Ugg Cortonas (the top tall spat parts detach so you can wear them as Chelsea boots too) are far less sleek because of the buckle details and the bulkier fit through the ankle. They have a more casual look, while the Weitzmans are more dressy.

Thanks for the Ariat endorsement, cynthiawalkersmith! Durability and comfort rank highly with me. FWIW, I can vouch for Sebago based on the same criteria. (Bought a pair of lace up ankle boots from them this summer and they are as fine as any shoe I've owned.)

I hear you, Jules, re: the buckles and things. It's typical for me to steer clear of doodads (shoedads?) but ankle buckles are almost ubiquitous this year, right? I've surprised myself by not minding them some of the time, like on this pair of Aquatalias.
