Are these infantile or amazing?

As soon as I saw Angie mention mary janes being on trend for fall/winter I thought about these shoes. The thing is, I am really drawn to them. I think they'd be great with cropped pants. I've been eyeing them since early summer, when I thought I'd like them with shirt dresses.

However, there's a part of me that thinks they look exactly like shoes for babies learning to walk. Am I just being weird? or is it the shoes that are weird?

I think they look like the kind of shoes one must try on to see how they work. Sometimes ugly-on-the-shelf shoes turn out just perfect on the foot.

These are out there too. They don't have the toddler thing going on, but they also don't appeal to me as much. I like the openness of the first pair.

I don't think they look like baby shoes, but then I spend zero time around babies and wear mary jane styles all the time. Did you watch the video on 6pm? Often, watching someone walk in the shoes is what it takes for me to understand whether I'll like the look or not. And, I look at the top-down view -- that's the one I see when I'm wearing them. The top view of these looks kinda Art Deco, which is neat.

I also quite like the monk strap ones you posted, which surprises me since I usually don't go for pointy shoes. Good thing I don't have a lot of luck with fit on Docs or I would be tempted -- and I have bought WAY too many shoes lately.

I much prefer the second pair you posted, for my personal taste, but I have never liked Mary Janes. I think I've always had that sort of little girl/girlie vibe from them, and I have a visceral aversion to them. But for someone else they might be amazing. Just depends on your style.

I'm a big fan of Mary Janes, and I don't think the first pair skews too toddler-ish. However, like Janet, I actually prefer the look of the Monk Strap pair. I think part of it has to do with the classic yellow Docs stitching and chunkier sole. If I'm gonna wear Docs I want them to look like Docs.

They remind me a lot of shoes I used to wear in the 90s when I was in high school, thus I think they are cool. Still, I too prefer the second pair, I think it would be easier to style.

Sally, you nailed it on how I would style them. Dresses with easy structure and cropped or rolled jeans. Funny that it is a Japanese source as I was very inspired by the Japanese tourists I saw on my recent vacation and have been trying to figure out how to incorporate some of their ideas into my wardrobe.

I'm going to hold off on getting them for now. I just got a pair of dark burgundy, patent penny loafers that I am quite enjoying. I can't imagine any outfits I'd wear these shoes with that I wouldn't wear my loafers with, until Spring rolls around, and I've learned I'm too fickle to buy for next season this early on.

I know you said you like the openness of the first pair, but I wonder if they'd be too breezy for fall and especially winter? They look more like a warmer weather shoe to me. I personally like the second pair better, but if you're drawn to the first pair then I think they're worth a try. Would need to see them on your foot and styled.

hmmmm, i think these are kind the kind of shoe really needs the right supporting players or it will come off looking childish....but if you get it right it would hit that fashion sweet spot of cool, quiet sophisication.

I found a lot of Comme de Garçons outfits fitting right into Sally's comment on Japanese style.
Anyways didn't find white shoes, but found a bunch of outfits that appealed to me.

Oh Anna, you enabling dear! Part of the reason I convinced myself to not get them is that they wouldn't be suited to socks, thus pushing them back to mostly spring/summer wear. I've also realized over the last couple of days that my new, much darker and shorter hair, makes me high contrast. These bright white shoes, with or without socks, may be a good contrast punch to some of the lower contrast parts of my closet.

The freebird quail sandals will be here later today. If they're a fail I'll be incredibly tempted to divert the refund from them to these shoes.

No, I didn't think "infantile" when I saw the shoes.

I love Sally's Japanese pictures, and think you're on to something by styling these Mary Janes in this way.

Also, Fluevogs has some "duckie" white shoes with a similar vibe. They might be on sale.

I like the second pair and Smittie's Fleuvogs much more than the first. It's my personal preference, but I think they look more sophisticated while also being edgy. I'm getting the "kid" vibe from the first pair (especially worn with a dress, and even moreso a dress with short socks) because the lines are so round.

Hard to say. Those are different-enough looking that it's hard for me to tell how they'll look on your feet. Once you have them on, I think you'll be able to tell right away if you think they are cool vs. childish.

The white monk strap pair, though, is fab for sure.

Both are great to my eye, but I have several Mary Jane, Monk strap or T strap pairs of Docs or other chunky shoes. I absolutely agree you can stylishly wear socks with them. Looking forward to seeing which you choose.

I have to try shoes on, just like I do pants and jackets. I think there's definitely a flattery and proportion thing going on with footwear that I simply can't leave to chance. I guess what I'm saying is, you never know unless you try them on -- particularly with your own outfits!
