Are plaid tops dated for fall?

I find myself drawn to the tops in the finds below. I missed out on one last fall but find myself wondering if this style is still somewhat "in" for this coming fall/winter season.

Maybe it is classic and will always be "in" - but wondered if fabbers that have this top or one similar will be sporting it this season or if it's been replaced for the new year and if so by what?

I hope not because I have 3 and just purchased another one. I love them and think it would be a great addition to your wardrobe. My oldest one is from Old Navy and it is going strong despite loads of washes.

Glory do you have to iron yours? Bc I find with my lifestyle ironing is just not gonna happen so I am hoping to find some no-iron options.

No I don't iron them but I hang to dry. I have 2 others: one from Marks Workwearhouse and the last one from Joe Fresh. All very reasonable price wise. My most recent (last week) is white and black similar to the second one you posted. Love it.

Glory that gives me hope. Also I am hoping they are not stiff/thick fabric, as our weather is pretty temperate and I don't need to dress for warmth. I think maybe it's best if I try a few out and see. Hopefully I will be in the US again very soon and can focus my shopping, including this type of top on my list. I could see them working with white jeans as well as medium and dark wash denim, so hopefully a smart purchase. Thanks again!

They are all over the place here too. Plaid shirt + skinnies + riding boots is a pretty classic look here though so they're always around.

I think the original question has now been answered, which leads me to another question.

As I mentioned and think about this more, I don't need or want a thick flannel shirt. I don't need to dress for warmth.

I need something that I can wash and hang to dry. NO ironing.

I have noticed that sometimes with thinner fabric tops, they tend to end up with the top button around my neck rather than staying put. NO idea why this happens, but I'd like to avoid it if possible.

So any wisdom you can offer on the FABRIC for said shirt?

Madewell is all in on the plaid shirts, so I think you're safe.

I really adore my flannel shirt. It's from Duluth Trading Co.--their crosscut performance flannel--and is a 60/40 cotton/poly blend. Normally, I'd be questioning that, but it's been great. It also has some tailoring details that help the fit a lot. Watch the video.

I think that sounds great. I wear mine with shorts, capris, white and dark denim. 2 of mine are a light weight almost like rayon. I saw a lady at the gym last week and had one thrown on over her duds and she looked great.
There are many weights and some are very light, like a thin cotton or rayon.

I have a flannel one from Tommy Hillfinger and it doesn't need to be ironed. Also I don't feel that it is too warm until January when A/C 's in everybody's house is at tropical temperature.

Flannel shirts are an iconic modern classic, abc. Not dated AT ALL. It's all in how they are worn. I'm thinking of trying this one myself. I love the orange.

Glad you asked the question, ABC - I was wondering the same thing! I might pair mine with my leather pencil skirt and pearls this year (as long as our doesn't look too 'last year') as well as with a stepped turtleneck pullover (an outfit Angie wore last year.)

Plaid is classic, but not hot and somewhat an embarrassment in hipsterville for manboys now... This is TMI, but the only men in Hipsterville are club bouncers... Also, we only have clubs, no night clubs... I'm going to move...

I'm going with classic. I have 3 or 4 (between ranch wear and home). Ranging from lightweight cotton to heavy warm flannel. Love them.

I agree - I've been out and about with my 19 year old shopping for clothes, and the plaid shirt is still everywhere. But - it's everywhere that a 19 year old shops, which is not really where I want to shop so......not sure what that means. I know Angie suggests it;s a classic, and it is, but that shirt that's the classic is not the same as the trendy version: slightly oversize and drapey etc. (i.e. the Rails shirts) I'm kind of sick of seeing them everywhere in Urban Outfitters, American Eagle etc and not sure the two I bought last year are going to see much wear. The plaid shirt of last year was the perfect example of my lemming-ness and thinking i needed to buy into a trend. I did, and wore each of them maybe once. I think it has to be part of your look to begin with or it just doesn't last. My 2c anyways

I hope not too; they have become a staple for me. With that said, while shopping with my daughter and her two friends at an upscale mall, plaid tops were EVERYWHERE. : )

I have a lot of flannel shirts because I find them perfect for hiking in cooler weather. I've only ordered the ones from LLBean and Woolrich and I really like the ones I buy from Woolrich best because they are more fitted and not as heavy as the ones from LLBean. I never iron my flannel shirts, just dry them in the dryer and they always look great. The Duluth Trading Company and J Crew flannel shirts look really nice so maybe I'll try them this year to see how I like them.

I don't iron my flannel shirts but tumble them a few minutes in a cool dryer to eliminate wrinkles, then hang to dry. However, my favorite plaid shirt is a silky polyester. It absolutely does not wrinkle and can be worn longer and layered more easily than flannel. I bought a new cotton one this fall but am looking for plaid shirts in silk. The ones below are silk but pricey. I hope for sales.

I have one gingham winter shirt now and two plaid. I'll be wearing them again this year, but in a slightly different way, perhaps, than last year -- I'll try to think of ways to freshen them up a bit, different combos than last year. (Maybe with my so-far nonexistent cropped pants or culottes, for instance, LOL.)

And I feel a bit different than Lisa about this. A shirt (or 3) is to my mind, an excellent way to play with a trend and freshen a closet. So what if you only wear it for a season and then move on to the next pattern? It's not too pricey. And if it is not truly "dated" then you can pass it along to someone else who will be thrilled.

Mind you, I did wear my plaid shirts a lot more than twice each -- I actually wore them a lot throughout their season. So I guess that is the real issue. Only buy a trendy seasonal item if you know you will wear frequently within its season, or get maximum joy per wear.

You're right Suz -and in my case, a plaid shirt was never ,ever anything I wore, EVER. Not for any reason other than it's just not me. It never felt natural , which is why I should not have thought it would all of a sudden be so now. Maybe it's regional thing? I can honestly say that I have never seen a single one of my female friends my age in a plaid flannel shirt. Interesting eh?

I like the '90s nostalgia of a plaid flannel shirt, except I didn't own one then! I keep thinking of how I would wear it and drawing a blank. From the runway pinboard of Angie's, I pinned my own board of ones I liked, and the only ones with plaid were tied around the waist. Hrm. So, while I think they'll be around this season, I still haven't decided if they're me.

To me, plaid is synonymous with fall, and I don't think plaid in general ever goes out of style, although certain scales of plaid and color schemes can be more or less trendy. Last year, iirc, was a lot of two-color and buffalo plaid, larger scale plaids, and all that retro heritage vibe.

I don't have a lot of flannel anymore - it doesn't get cold enough here - but I have several plaid shirts that are broadcloth. I think the black and white one in Finds was last fall from BR. Nordstrom also had a Sandra one in this year's NAS in blues, and carries these Nexx button-ups that are double-layered which I really like. It's also the sort of thing that ON and Gap will have tons of in a month or so at a reasonable price, as long as you're not looking for something really warm and long-lasting for actual outside workwear (if you are, I recommend LL Bean or Duluth Trading).

Hi abc...plaid is another major love of mine and I've seen them everywhere lately... just bought 3 last week! They are so so versatile, I wear mine tucked into jeans, with a cami or tee underneath and keep buttons open, with shorts and skirts, under a blazer and even just tied to the waist!
Zara has some beautiful ones, bright colors and very soft but good material fabric ☺

I got a few of these Soft Wash Flannel plaid shirts from Banana Republic in 2013 and they have held up so well! I didn't pay full price, I think I got them in early October for under $40 each. Totally worth it. I wash them in cold water, shake out and hang to dry. No ironing needed! I get compliments when I wear this shirt.

ETA -- fabric is not too thick, I live in California with mild winters with temps ranging from 30s to 60s.
