Are large hoop earrings on trend?

I may be way behind the times, but it seems like I see large thin hoop earrings wherever I look lately. Even my bff (who's over 50 like me) was wearing some the last time we went out to dinner. I wear a very modest pair of gold hoop earrings (probably 1 1/2 inches diameter) almost every day, but I'm wondering if I should try a larger pair for nighttime drama.

So, is this a thing? Do you ever wear big hoops? How big is acceptable without veering into hoochie territory?

One of my friend's daughters once said to me (while I was wearing enormous hoops) "Da bigger da hoe, the bigger da hoe!" But I wear them anyway. The ones you posted are very delicate and look timeless to me.

This is an interesting question, as I've always wondered whether earrings "trend" or not, or are they just sort of timeless.

I love earrings. I have hoops in both silver, gold, and multi. The diameter of the hoop ranges from 0.5" to 2". These measurements are what flatter my oblong face.

If you like earrings, by all means, get some in the diameter that makes you happiest.

I find hoops to be very classic (as long as they are not so big they can double as a halo or necklace :))
I have a silver and a gold pair and where them frequently.

I absolutely love my big hoop earrings - I think they make simple outfits look glamorous. I vote always in style too, mainly based on the fact that I want it to be so!!

Thanks for all the opinions! I had a feeling they'd be voted a classic, but I just wasn't sure about the really big sizes being classic.

So, now the question is 2 inches? 2.5 inches? 3 inches? I want them to be dramatic enough to be noticed, but not ridiculously out of proportion.

I agree large hoops are always in style! I do think they are more of a casual/glam look. Evenings were made for hoops as is weekend wear. Go for it.

Well, I have to say I love anything that Angelina wears. I mean, the woman can make St. John hot.

That said, in my world, hoops are always hoochie. Even when you're not ghetto and live on the golf course, they kinda say 7th wife. Sadly, actually, living on the golf course says hoochie in my world. My peeps live in a high state of judgement.

In honour of them, I have the most fabulous 2" shiny blue heart hoops. Mwahaha!

Personally, I dislike very large hoops that are heavy enough to drag down the earlobe. I think it looks awkward and unpleasant. (Anya from Project Runway loves her gigantic hoops, and her earlobes often look like they're reaching for her shoulders.)

April, I remember Anya's earrings. It was almost hard to look at her they were so big and heavy.

I'm thinking something in the 2 - 2 1/2 inch range would be plenty dramatic enough for me!

I like skinny hoops when it comes 2inches and larger. I will do even a 3 inch with a simple outfit : for example while wearing a sleeveless silk blouse in black and my joe's jeans.Not 7th wife in my humble opinion...

NL, it seems that as opposed to being on trend, hoops are kind of beside trends. They're always with us, and can look hoochie or elegant, depending on how they're being worn.

I agree that hoops are always current because they are classic. I think that even the larger ones, as long as they are tasteful, will be timeless.

A book I read talked about sizing accessories, and one of the tips given for picking the size of earrings was to look at your face and pick a feature--say, your nose or your eyes--and then try to replicate the exact size of the feature in the earring. You can rotate the feature if necessary. So, in the hoops scenario, you could maybe get hoops that are the same length as your nose or that are equivalent to the width of one of your eyes or the width of your mouth. I haven't tried this on myself yet, but it might at least give you a place to start.

Well, after reading all comments I have to go and dust off my large golden and silver hoops, I think they are 2 - 2.5"... I've been sticking to my 1" silver ones. I also think that your hairstyle would affect which ones look best, I'm thinking longer, flowy hair can stand larger hoops... but what about with shortish hair or a bob?

I'm not sure about how short and/or long hair affects the look, Gracie. That's what I rely on YLF for.

Gigi, that's an interesting concept. I have a pretty prominent nose, so I guess that means bigger hoops!

I'm thinking there's probably a size range for each person base in facial features, neck length, etc. for the timeless look, that is. Intentionally supersized would be a different look.

I'm conservative when it comes to hoops. I think up to about 2" is a classic look, but when they start getting into bangle bracelet size, then not so much. But everyone has a different accessory style, so if you like the look then don't let anyone tell you you can't wear them.

Gracie I agree with you long flowy hair can stand larger earrings. If I wear smaller hoops when my hair is straight they are completely lost. It looks like I'm not wearing any at all.

I get the sense that hoops are one of those timeless items. I have only started wearing them since my hair was cut short as they never really worked with my bob. Im enjoying them. If I wear hoop earring, I don't wear much else in the way of accessories.

I, too am an earring fan and a fan of larger hoops. I think they bring some drama, and some youthfulness to a look. modest little hoops reminds me of looking like my mom. I've got a 2.5" pair (and a little modest pair for work).

I think the size depends on your face shape. I don't like them to be shoulder-grazing--that's a 7th Wife look to me (can that be a Thing, Rachy?). I like them hovering right around my jawline, no matter my length of hair. when my hair is shorter than that, or just about the same length, I would usually pull it back from my face a little or tuck my hair behind my ears if I want to show off my earrings.

I love hoops. I wish I could wear bigger ones but they hurt my ears. I have gold and silver ones. I think the best size and width depends on your face, facial features and hair. I realized that after I bought a pair last year and hated how they looked on me.

7th wife!!! How wicked is that? I haven't heard that term.
