Are Converse Too Young for Me?

Hi Angie & Everyone . . . . After reading Angie's Paris Ped, and hearing tons of you talk about your Converse sneakers, I have to ask. . . . . Aren't Converse more for the "younger generation?" I am almost 50 (ugh!!) but I am "very young in personality" lol, and in my humble opinion, I think I would look silly with them . . . what do you all think? I'm looking forward to your answers -- I know they'll be good!!! Thanks

Of course you can wear Converse Chuck T's (that's what I call 'em)--it's more about what you wear WITH them that matters. I have a pair of baby blue low top ones. I wear them with long pants that kind of bunch up around the shoe itself, pants that are kind of loose, but not baggy or dumpy looking.

Personally, I'd rather wear something youthful and fun than something old and frumpy. If people think I'm too old for my shoes...that's THEIR problem.

Well, I'm almost 40...and that's only 10 years away from almost 50. I'll take a photo of me in my Chucks. It's a fun look, not necessarily YOUNG. Actually, I can't remember the last time I saw someone "young" wearing them!

Mine aren't converses though; they're Airwalks from Payless. Cost less, and I think they are more comfortable. I have black and red.

I mostly only wear them on the weekends, and I stick to classic colors (though I wouldn't mind some of those grey ones!). I let my teenagers have fun with the patterns and wilder colors. They also replace their laces with neon-colored laces to funk them up some more. And, for the teen generation, it's not cool until they are so worn they are dingy and ratty and ripped....

I think if you keep them clean and neat and not dingy and ratty and ripped, any age can pull them off. Sure beats having sore feet, and they look more stylish than orthopedic footwear.

Really Nicole? I thought they were more for the the "twenty-something" crowd. Please take a picture and post it, I'd love to see how you wear them. I saw someone with a pair of LaCoste sneakers that were a sleeker version of the Converse. . . but probably 3 times as much!!!

OF COURSE you can wear Converse at 50! I intend wearing Converse at 75.

If there ever comes an age at which I have to give up Converse, I would NOT be celebrating that birthday. I'd probably lock myself in the bathroom and cry.

That's funny Lisa. I dress for work, but when I get home, I take off my work clothes, hang them back up, and wear comfy clothes.

Hey Nicole- I just got my Converse- they only had pink, white, black and yellow in my size- I got the black- what do you think? I could order them, but I really wanted to wear them to a company picnic this week- but I can still return them if you all think black is too goth-wannabe.

Black & white Chuck Taylors are fab. I have a pair. They need to have white soles though. They look masculine if the soles are black too.

O.K....... another Chuck's question - I am assuming that you wear these Converse without socks- right??? Could someone post a picture of them wearing their Converse with shorts???? (of course walking shorts to the knee!!! - That much I have learned - lol) I enjoyed reading all of the posts -- thanks guys!!!! P.S. Where have you all purchased your Converse?

Your assumption is incorrect Niecey. I always wear Converse with socks. Don’t wear them with walk shorts. Not a good look unless you're a teenybopper.

Niecy, I do wear socks with my Chucks. The really short ones that don't show much. The pants I wore with them in the photo are not jeans. They are a thin cotton material with a lot of drape--but the pants are a very casual cut--they have cargo pockets and patch pockets on the front. (They are very old from ON--but one of my favorite casual day pants). I think the reason I love these pants so much is the combination of a drapey fabric with a very casual pant style. I have been looking for similar pants for about a year, but with no such luck. So, don't limit yourself to wearing your new kicks with only denim. The right kind of casual pant can work really well with them.
