Rae- what length are you looking at? Also, I'm not always good at paying attention to details, so am not sure as to your climate.
If I were living in a place like Seattle, I'd go for something like this, even though it's kind of pricey:

This one's a little more reasonable in price, but it's raspberry and not necessarily a true red...

That said, I like it because it's just a tiny bit different than all the other trench coats out there.
What colour would you *love* to have? What length? Also - are you in an area or do you have a lifestyle where a trenchcoat would be extremely useful?
Macy's seems to have a good selection of trench coats in nice colours right about now, and I just got a coupon in the mail for an extra 20% off between March 7th and 11th - and it's not one of their usual coupons that has all kinds of exclusions. Speaking of which, on the Macy's site, I saw something that made me think of you, though I am unsure of the neckline/closure, and it's not a vibrant colour (it's silver-ish rather than red, yellow, green, coral, blue or what have you):

Another one that jumped out at me (in the Tuscany colour):

How much time (approximately) do you have to find a nice spring trench?
Meanwhile, it might be a good idea to get out there and start trying stuff on...looking wherever you can. I wasn't actually planning on buying a new spring trench coat, but was getting tired of my two black trench coats, and I ended up finding a *magenta* trench coat at Marshall's for less than $50 while on vacation in late January.
Best wishes for finding a good spring trench in time for your trip!
