Anyone spotted a good-looking men's camel coat?

My son (very slim but broad-shouldered with big upper arms from weight-lifting) mentioned five or fifty times this weekend that he really wants a camel topcoat.

His birthday falls right after Christmas (he'll be 20), so I've started looking around.

I'm not opposed to spending more, but given that his style is ever-changing, I thought it wise not to go super high-end.

Anyone have advice, or seen anything promising?

He's an art-school student and over the next few years will need something for job-hunting and the sorts of things that students do. We're about to get him his first suit as well.

Prefer the jcrew, more current stance, looks like it moves better.

A sporty fit is available in shirts, not sure about coats. May need to get any coat taken in if it fits in the arms and shoulders.

I think the first one seems more modern. Also it's insulated. If it were my son I would look at thrift stores. They have a lot of that kind of coat, although they're easier to find in summer.

I'd highly recommend taking him to do try-ons in person. A coat can look great on the model and look totally different on a real person. Also, a lot of dressier men's coats are designed to be worn over a full suit. Finding a nice wool coat that's cut to wear over a casual outfit is more difficult -- although with broad shoulders it might be easier.

I've been shopping for a coat for my husband for almost a year now, but he never wants to come with me to try things on, so it's kind of like pulling teeth. He'd prefer to wear his Arc'teryx puffy everywhere. You're lucky your son is taking an interest in personal style!

Thanks, all, for your suggestions. I texted him a link to the BR coat and suggested he jog on over to the nearest BR, have a look, and check out the fit, between classes this week.

With all his heavy hint-dropping, it's not going to be a surprise anyway, so may as well be sure it fits.

Plus, left on his own in New York, he's apt to wander into Barney's and develop a craving for a $3K cashmere creation by some designer whose ads he admired during NY Fashion Week. Best to steer him proactively toward BR.

Check out Lands' End. I had very good luck when my 20 somethings wanted pea coats. When I was buying, the reviews from mom's with lanky athletic sons was very positive. The boys love the coats - going into their 4th winter. Below is a pic of the LE version of a camel coloured overcoat. (note: the price is CAD, so will be different in USD.)

My younger son loved DH's camel hair coat at that age, wore it and left it somewhere. Don't spend too much. Also, does he have a color preference?

Be sure that he tries on coats with a winter layer underneath and does the hug test! DH has broad shoulders and big biceps from weightlifting, and the big arms cause more fit issues than the shoulders. I start with places that have more American cuts like Lands End.

I believe he's after a modern look (i.e., slash pockets rather than flap pockets) and a more golden-tan camel rather than a pinkish-tan camel. I'm basing this on a very traditional coat we saw in Brooks Brothers that he rejected completely, based on the flap pockets and the color.

Joy, that is great advice. He will almost certainly leave it on the subway, so I will keep the price as reasonable as possible.

I just looked at BB and they have an actual camel hair coat. It is a very odd color. Thank your lucky stars he didn't like it - even on sale it's nearly $1300!

Ha -- that's probably the pinkish one that we saw in the store! He was so negative about it, I didn't even look at the price. Good thing, eh?
