I know, Janet, they're both terrible right? I never watch sports on tv but I like to cross my fingers for everyone we know from other places and the teams they root for (and yes, I know some of these countries did not make the cup): Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras, Venezuela, Netherlands, Belgium, China, Japan, Ireland, Poland, Estonia, Italy, France, England, Scotland, Wales, Ghana...
I actually find it slightly hard to root for the US team because it's so clear that the US public cares nothing about footie, so why should they (we) take credit for a winning team?
A funny anecdote. I have friends from Brazil who are obsessed with football. I mentioned to the husband one day that I had watched a film called Hermanos, about 2 Venezuelan friends who are very talented soccer players. His response: "Venezuela doesn't have any talented soccer players." I thought my Venezuelan sister-in-law might consider these fighting words, but when I repeated them to her she just sighed and said, "Yes, that's true." I gather the Venezuelans care more about baseball.
