any way to wear a cut-out dress...? updated with possibilities

I've decided the cut-out dress, after the two-piece dress, has got to be the way for diabetics like myself. No scandalous hiking of skirts for a shot of insulin. Maybe something with side cut-outs that can be hidden under a topper? Is there such a thing?

Do side zip dresses work? (You know the ones that pull over your head but have that little vent in the side that you zip when it's on). Where does the shot need to go?

What a great idea. I did a search just now. I was seeing a lot of really short ones, but also remember seeing some longer ones on Modcloth.

rabbit - That is positively brilliant! Normal place for a shot is around the torso, tummy level. You can do it on the thigh too (which is what I usually end up doing with a dress), but you're looking to inject into fat and that's a little limited on the leg.

columbine - Ooh! That link makes me excited! If I were smart, I'd go on a spree before this style goes out...

This is a very interesting trend but you do have to have a fit tummy area to wear it.

I love the last one! And a really clever idea. My Oma had diabetes her whole life and in the last years she always asked me to help her in the restroom when she had to have a shot during family events - she always wore a corselet when she dressed up and I had to help her out and into it. I wouldn't have in her stead, but it was important to her to look good. So I know that easy access can make your life a lot easier. Love Rabbit's zipper idea too, I regularly come across dresses that have this feature.

Rachy you have a great collection of dresses here and potentially practical! I definately think longer hems are better to mitigate the exposed skin on the side (which might peek out from under the topper with movement). The last one is a fav of mine

Haha, what a great thread !!!! I love the idea and dresses. I think you could get some linen shrugs or cropped sweaters to cover the sides when you are meeting with someone. But being in a creative field gives you a lot of leeway, no ?

Now......onto me. These are brilliant for me so that some of my fat rolls can bulge out a bit thereby making me feel like less of a sausage. And speaking of that, what a great way to eat all one wants without having to unzip anything . ; ). Ironic spillover.....

Sarah - Good point about hem length. Hadn't thought about the balance that way, but that would help.

Astrid - I can see your Oma took good care of herself (and you of her). A hard thing to do before the 1980s, to be honest. Like how in the 40s and probably into the 50s, if not the 60s - diabetics used giant needles they'd have to file to keep the point. Wild.

Wow, what great ideas! I love these cutout dresses and the fact that the right one could even be useful is even better. I also love rabbit's idea of a dress with a zip down the side. Gosh, that's how dresses always used to be made....you can still sometimes find skirts with side zips.

Not work appropriate -- but overalls would have a certain functionality here as well. Just undo the buckles on the straps, let the flaps fall down, and there you go. Well, assuming the top underneath would be easy to deal with.

Hey, that's a thought, Suz! Overalls. I suppose not my elusive faux leather ones for the office, but a dressier pair like one of Annagybe's could possibly fly. Lol. I had a funny thought: if only someone would make overalls in gabardine... Lol, life would be awesome!

I really liked the green dress and the black dress from your links, Rachylou. Meanwhile, I'm keeping my eyes open for side zip dresses. Thought I saw some at Target but that turned out to be pocket detailing and not an opening.

This dress is really pretty but too formal I'm guessing.

Rachy - what about wearing a thin cami underneath in the same color? A bit less access friendly but you pull it up and then ready under to pull it down. No skin showing but maybe more work appropriate. What about shirt waist dresses? a couple of buttons and you're good? I love rabbit's idea of side zips. I think scanning the sites with lookout for zippers, buttons and strategic cut outs. If the dress is think enough and you are handy you could even stitch cami like fabric inside but loose bottom and sides like a curtain. Wow, Rachy I am thinking if you are handy this is really entrepreneurial. You could create of line of clothing just for this purpose (hey look at well it's going for breast feeing moms!!) Just a thought!
