Any guesses for Spring/Summer 2011 trends?

In anticipation of Angie and Greg's tour of FW shows, I thought it would be fun to guess what trends might emerge for the spring. What items do you think will be must-haves? What about colors? Are there any shapes or fabrics you think will show up across many lines? Do you expect some recent trends to fade?

I'm too much a newbie at all this to even begin to guess, but I'd love to hear what you think!

ETA: Gack, I typed 2010 when I meant 2011. No, I don't mean to travel back in time. Fixed that!

I heard "angry sandals"--strappy, black, edgy, let's-take-this-outside gladiator types--are on their way out. I certainly hope that's not true...but that's the word on the street.

I'm hoping we see some color again--that isn't purple or coral. I like both purple and coral but I think I have had my fill.

Pastels! Sheer fabrics. Ummm...I have no other ideas.

I suspect that we will see more non-pencil skirts, especially fuller shapes and maybe pleats. I think these have already started appearing but will be everywhere.
I also predict wider pants. With fuller bottom shapes, I suspect tops will be slim, shorter and simple...fewer tunics, ruffles, and embellishments.
Another trend may be more tucking of tops into skirts and pants.
I'm definitely not hoping these are the trends but I feel there's going to be a shape shift. Hope I'm wrong.

I'm guessing brown will be a dominant color, just because there's been a lot of black around lately. I'm also hoping for more bright colors, but we'll see.

Maya, I love the term angry sandals. Perfectly describes gladiator styles. I was wondering if they would start fading from sight yet, but rather doubt it as they seem so popular.

Ana, brown would be an interesting & unusual color for spring and summer, don't you think? Brights are always great for spring/summer. I wonder what the most popular colors will be?

Ugh, everyone's predictions are making my stomach churn! Every possible trend I don't like is being mentioned.

I expect lots of color for spring since we have alot of neutrals for fall out.I think people will be quite tired of all the beige, greys and earth tones of fall...designers may anticipate this and will want everyone to rush out for some spring color.

I also would expect to see a fuller silhouette in dress pants and longer more flowy skirts

HOPING the denim silhouette doesn't change

I am expecting to see stronger make up..no more pale lips!! to go with the brighter colors. More dramatic eyes and brows

I don't have any guesses but a lot of wishes. Like dresses with longer hems ~ no more mid-thigh lengths, please! But I'm more interested in hearing people's predictions.

I mean light brown, like tan and stuff, rather than dark or chocolate brown. I hope I'm wrong, since I don't like most shades of brown at all.

Taylor, I can absolutely see that. I wonder if denim silhouettes would change to go with fuller dress pants? Skinnies haven't been on trend for that long ~ right? ~ so they will probably stick around for a bit longer. And good point ~ makeup trends change to go with fashion changes.

Oh, Ana, right, I see! Camel is becoming a big color now, so perhaps that will carry through to spring/summer.

I just opened the morning's Wall Street Journal which has an article about Fashion Week. They predict bright colors, ruffles and floaty fabrics, shorts, pants with wider bottoms, cropped tops, and camel/beige morphing into off white/bright whites. They also predict an end to sharp shoulders and pleated peg-legged pants. I can't wait to see what Angie says.

I actually predict the return of flares, in keeping with the 90's resurgeance.
I'm guessing coral and turquoise will be replaced with a brighter pink and some other bright...for fun I'll say yellow.
Less emphasis on ballet flats in favour of other closed-toe styles.
Fuller skirts make sense, since it's been on the trend list for awhile but hasn't taken off. Maybe this is the season it goes mainstream?

Ooh, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for bright colors, off-white and fuller/A-line skirts!

Brights and white make me very happy.

All of these voluminous bottoms make me very concerned though. I'm not about to give up my skinnies and leggings yet, and full skirts are hard to wear. I like the look of wider legs on others, but not on me for sure. I don't like anything that breaks at the knee or widens too much through the leg. It just isn't flattering on my petite frame, especially since I don't wear heels.

However, I do remember designers trying to bring back wide legs a few years ago and it just didn't work, and I'm guessing it still won't work unless they decide to take away our skinnies--which would just be cruel. I hope these are just additions to and not replacements of current denim trends.

I never got to try slouchy pants and sharp shoulder jackets Bummer. Sharp shoulders never really caught on. Even while "trendy" they were very scarce.

Fashion is really disappointing me lately. I can't think of anything I'm really excited about.

Louise, you're so right. Angie will help us figure out how to play with any trend in a way that works for us, if we want.

Joy, thanks for telling us about the WSJ article. Which of the trends you mention do you think will come to pass, if any?

Yay, Michelle, you're playing the game! Very specific predictions, I like that! I could totally see ballet flats fading in order to make way for a different type of closed-toe shoe that would pair well with fuller skirts.

Maya, I could see fuller bottoms dominating the runways but not taking the place of skinnies and straights. Remember Angie's blog post on whether skinnies were becoming timeless/classic? I see them as being around for a long time to come, even while runways do their own thing. And if designers tried to take them away now, I think they'd have a revolt.

These colors are mainly continuations of last spring. Nice that coral and turquoise/teal are still strong. Yay honeysuckle! In any case it is infinitely better than what is out now.

Off to download that Pantone app. And I want that Pantone credit card...

Lots of clear, saturated brights. Not my cup of tea but still fun to look at and enjoy on others. It will be interesting to see the colors in action on the runways.

So, what's different about spring 2011's pantone colors compared to past pantone springs (2008-2010):

- no yellow - though there is a light orange beeswax color, which they claim is a "honeyed yellow"
- orange - there are two oranges for 2011, while past springs had corals and golden yellows, but no real oranges
- brown - there were some brown-ish tones for previous springs, but they tended to be rather mixed with gray
- pink/red - past springs had both pinks and reds, but spring 2011 has combined them, and doesn't have a red in the palette

what's basically the same:

- turquoise
- lavender
- gray
- "dusty" green
- light pink - though for spring 2011 it seems it will be even lighter than past spring's light pinks

Thanks, Kate for posting the Pantone link. IMHO, it's the ultimate color AND fashion forecaster, season after season. I print it out and put it in binders for reference. Since I'm a part-time design student, I'm always sketching whenever I get an idea, like I have a permanent "Project Runway" going on in my head all the time! Perhaps fuller bottoms and leaner tops are on the fashion horizon? We'll just have to wait and see.

Horray for light pink! I have a lot and it looks good on me. Plus, it's just one of those great colors that seems to really say "Spring". (yeah, I know, not everyone likes or is flattered by it...)

I'd also welcome fitted tops/full bottoms since that's more flattering on me...even though I also enjoy the fitted bottom/fuller top (plus waist emphasis in my case) look.

Kate, thanks so much for sharing all that info with us! I am going to go to you with any questions I have on color, that's for sure! I'm excited to see the oranges. Do you think turquoise will be gone soon? It seems like "teal" has been everywhere and I'm waiting for it to play itself out before I start going for it again.

Quail, turquoise was the 2010 color of the year, so maybe it's on its way out, but one of the spring 2011 colors "pays homage" to turquoise , so I think we'll be having at least another year of turquoise.

I find the variety of warm, cool, bright, and muted colors for each pantone season particularly interesting. Moreover, a lot of the trendy colors for any given season don't go together particularly well, which forces/enables us to wear a broader range of colors/neutrals than what's on trend. It's also fascinating how iterations of the same color come back season after season, so we're not likely to see a color and say "oh, that red was so 2009".
