Any Goth’s, how do you dress?

I have a new friend/coworker who says she is Goth, she is 25 years old. I’ve only met her twice, she was wearing. (black skinny jeans with holes, black belt, black shirt, black boots, black nail polish, black frame glasses)
She is having a birthday get together and invited all the coworkers and we are thinking of going.
We asked what she likes and she suggested we get her more goth clothing, but none of us are sure what to get? Do we get what we see her wear in the exact brands, or different items in black, we aren’t familiar with how goths dress and she is new here so we don’t know her well.

If anyone is Goth or knows what we should buy help is appreciated!

“Goth” is not a term you’d ever apply to me, but I was admiring a pair of red ombré boots on this site recently. Reviews often surprise me by stressing how well made their things are; I’ve never bought anything here, so can’t back that up personally. https://www.rebelsmarket.com/s/goth-16

FashIntern, maybe if this was someone i'd meet more than twice, but if i've only meet them twice, i'm not going to get it right, so why stress...sorry, but i've got way more important things to worry about...

There are a number of types of goth which is shown in this youtube video. Depending upon her style, punk, Lolita, Steam punk, cyber punk, Romantic, Batcave - will depend upon what she likes.

I would recommend a simple black sweater if you don't really know what her particular style is. Alternatively, a scarf with skulls is likely to be appreciated. Some Halloween items are also really good for goths too.

@Fashintern, Hot Topic is a great idea and your Son is right! The question is what to get... lol

@Rachylou, dressing Victorian is called “Steampunk” nowadays but I don’t think that’s her style.

@kkards We are all putting our money together to pitch in and buy gifts and have it from everyone, it wouldn’t feel right to give one expensive gift card. Possibly one of us could give a small expense gift card but the rest of us are thinking clothing, Hot Topic is good but we still need to think what to get to match her.

@Bijou, I’m not sure what style of goth she is, her outfits are very simple and not elaborate and I’ve never seen her in skulls or anything overly goth like that, nor a scarf.

Jess, yay, I’m glad you are reaching out to welcome her to the group in this way! I agree with you that things that look too much like a Halloween costume wouldn’t come off well. Maybe several accessories or smaller things instead of putting all the money on one garment?

I asked her if I could share a photo of her to friends asking about her style that are interested and she was absolutely fine with it saying I don’t even have to ask, these are from her Facebook. Sometimes she dresses Goth and other times you wouldn’t know. Maybe this will help decide what to get. It doesn’t show below her waist but she always has the same black jeans, belt, and boots on at work.

she looks rather elegant and classic goth, not quite as dramatic as queen Siouxie Sioux.
I might suggest a faux fur scarf, I have one of each of these styles (long ones) and they are both quite lush and inexpensive

I suppose that’s true re steampunk, but for some reason the two are separate in my mind. I may be confusing/conflating steampunk with post-apocalyptic in my head.

Yes steampunk is related to Victorian and Goth, but quite distinct in that it incorporates the technology aspect.

So someone you’ve met just twice is asking for specific gifts for her own birthday party ? And she’s ok with having photos posted of her ( including her face ) on a public site by someone who doesn’t post photos themselves ? Your coworkers can’t provide ideas for you ? The whole thing strikes me as really odd . My apologies for being aggressive - I’m just not having any of it today .

Love the fur collar idea! I don’t trust myself to hit the vibe accurately enough to suggest specific items, but a couple other ideas are a bracelet or necklace (simple black chokers were a thing with them—idk if they still are) and maybe black lace socks (not stockings—too personal).

What are you planning to wear? Do you do black at all? Obviously you don’t want to try to become another person, but if the party is going to be full of goth people, it might be fun to nod in that direction.

Im thinking of buying a silver necklace with some sort of stone, and possibly a black belt with studs. Another coworker wants to get the faux fur collar

The whole party won’t be Goths, most of her friends aren’t goth and nobody at work is. She will have family there too.

I do like to wear some black in my outfits actually :D, though it’s not necessary to I might wear some black jeggings with a casual top, shirt tucked and belted, and sneakers for comfort.

I would probably be a goth if I hadn't had so many dress codes that require all black clothing at work. As it is, I'm probably more faded street ninja, what with my love of grey LOL
