another hairstyle thread! - YouLookFab Forum

As I mentioned in Maya's hairstyle thread, I'm also booked in for a cut next weekend! Apart from being long overdue, I really want to go a fair bit shorter than my current hairstyle (past shoulder blades).

I am completely inept when it comes to hair. I wash it, put in some product and let it dry. No straightening or blow waving.

I have very fine, very voluminous hair (hairdressers are always surprised because it looks like its very thick but its all body, no hair). I got it chemically straightened a year ago, but it hasn't gone straight, just wavy (it used to be a lot curlier).

I'm not 100% sure, but I think my face shape is square (but it could be round too??) I have a ridiculously tiny forehead, but most websites I've looked at suggest that square faces have broad forehead so I'm a bit confused!

I want something extremely low maintenance. Here is what I'm thinking about also possibly with more emphasis on the layering:

Getting it to this length would mean losing 15-20cm of hair. I'm worried about how much my hair will frizz up if I do this. Frizzy hair is the bane of my life!!!

If anyone has any kind of opinions or advice I'd be happy to hear it. Otherwise I'll just be asking for them to chop it off and add in layers, I don't know how else to describe it!!

I agree that it's difficult to determine you face shape. You have a bit of a widdows peak--but you're no heart shaped because your forhead is narrower than your jaw line. Maybe you're a triangle?

Now if your hair was chemically straightened a year ago, isn't the new growth hair curly again? DId any of the treatmeat wear off on the older har? I think you're going to need to research cuts for curly hair--and maybe even a hairdresser who has experience with curly haired people.

I'm confused about your hair texture though. Is it curly or are you trying to get it to be curly again? I think you need to find a stylist that will work with whatever your natural texture is now.

I got my hair straightened, but after the first time I washed it, it was never straight again. The 2nd pic I posted is how it looks today still: paradoxically the newer growth near the crown of my head is reasonably straightish because its held down by the weight of my hair, but from the ears down its curly/wavy despite the straightening (although less curly than it was pre-straightening).

I don't want to change the curliness/straightness of my hair right now, just chop a decent amount off so its healthier and more manageable!

Bangs I simply don't think I can do because my forehead is so small - literally less than 5cm from the top of my eyebrow to my hairline.

So for triangle shapes this is what they say on thehairstyler.com:

"Styles to avoid: You should avoid long, full hairstyles that draw attention to your jaw line and styles that add width to your jaw line e.g. styles that kick out at the bottom."

Do you think the Kiera Knightley pic is doing the widening bit too much at the jawline??

I'm going to a hairdresser recommended to me by my new physio, who says she is good. She also recommended the furniture shop I bought my couch from, so I'm hoping this will turn out just as good

Well ,as a stylist I have only one word of advice for you. SHRINKAGE. Allow for it. 1 to 3 inches Determine the finished length with your stylist.(After your washed cut and styled) where do you want your length to fall.???

Your face is so pretty and this style is on the longer side...long layers etc. You don't need to worry about this working with your face shape....it will work

Layerd wavy, or curly hair is such a pretty look...enjoy it..You will wear it beautifully...just don't go too short and you should love this look.

You have beautiful hair! As a fellow curly girl, I agree with Taylor. My hair shrinks up a lot when it dries. My stylist usually takes out a lot of volume when she cuts my hair, and it makes it look so much better.

For me, product is key. I get frizz city if I don't put something in it. (Did you ever see the episode of FRIENDS where Monica goes to Hawaii and by the end of the show her hair is so frizzy she looks like Diana Ross? It's hysterical!) Do you have a product you really like? I've experimented with creams, gels, sprays - everything. I just found a cream mouse that is amazing - "Whipped Cream" from Sebastian. I LOVE this product so much! But my hair is really short now, so maybe that's why it's working so well.

I would listen to Taylor, since she's a pro! I would think with your beautiful hair you could easily do that style.

I think with all the advice you got you are sorted but I just wanted to tell you that the haircut you posted is very pretty. And if you are worried about the frizz there are some very quick, user-friendly, no-fuss products out there.

Taylor I hear you on the shrinkage! The shorter my hair gets, the more it shrinks so that's definitely something to take into account!! I really appreciate your professional opinion - I'm glad you think this look will work!!!

Hehe tarzy I know the epsiode you mean!! I certainly feel like that sometimes!! (although less now that I had it straightened) Is your hair thick curly or thin curly?? I'm still looking for the "perfect" hair product. Right now I slap in some serum, some leave-in conditioner and some curly hair product and hope for the best

Thanks for the vote of confidence Angie. I like long hair, but its a pain at times. This afternoon I piked out on going to the beach just cos I didn't want to have to wash my hair afterwards. Yes I'm that lazy!!!
