Lol at all the stories! Ok I have another one.
When Xena (the German Shepherd) was 2, we adopted Ginger - a gorgeous Neapolitan Mastiff who was about 10 months old at the time and was an abandoned dog. That baby was always always hungry....kind of like Jerry's Cousin....she would eat *anything* in a matter of seconds and I never saw her refuse food all her life. But bread was literally her favourite thing in the world.
She had been with us a good 2 weeks by the time this happened. Our precious Xena was (and still is) a very fussy eater. She only eats meat and dog food, though she's not a greedy dog at all. I had made cheese and veggie grilled sandwiches for breakfast. My husband had finished his breakfast and was leaving for work, so I left my sandwich on the kitchen counter and went to see him off. After that I decided to put a load of clothes for wash and then enjoy my breakfast in peace.
When I walked into the kitchen, my first thought was that I had dropped alot of capsicum bits on the floor. How sloppy of me! I thought I'd clean it up after I eat. And then I saw that there was nothing to eat. My plate was still there, but my sandwich was not!
Xena had quietly snuck into the bedroom and Ginger was sitting besides the kitchen door (her favourite spot) with a guilty look on her face. Moments like this, she would look away when I looked at her face and said her name, in a super cute way I can't quite describe in words. Then she would look back at me and wag her tail, and look away again when I wanted her to make eye contact.
I had no doubt that Ginger had eaten my sandwich, but how did she get it? Despite her massive size, Ginger wasn't an agile dog. She almost never ever jumped up, mostly because mastiffs have a heavier front body with heavy head and shoulders and leaner, taller hind legs. She couldn't have reached my plate because it wasn't on the edge of the kitchen counter, she couldn't have jump up....she couldn't support her weight on her hind legs. But Xena could and still does jump up. But Xena doesn't steal food. Ever. And Xena doesn't eat bread or cheese.
It'll always stay a mystery how Ginger got Xena to steal the sandwich for her. Both dogs looked guilty, and I know for sure that if Ginger had to steal my sandwich she'd find a way to drop the whole plate - not leave the plate sitting neatly on the counter with no sandwich, and all cheese and bread eaten with capsicum left for me to clean on the floor.
After I made another sandwich and calmed down, I found the whole episode super hilarious!!! It's after that day that Xena accepted Ginger as part of her 'pack' and stopped being jealous of her. A stolen sandwich did the trick
