Many of you may have seen or heard the news, as it was prominent on national news outlets today. Our beautiful little city was rocked today by another mass shooting, and I lost a friend. I hadn't known him long, but he was a reporter, and a good one — he was smart, funny, kind-hearted, and engaging, and we had several great conversations.

It seems like nearly everyone I know in town knew one of the victims. If you have a thought to spare for a community in pain, we could use it.

I have a feeling I will be doing more work on behalf of the advocates for sensible gun control in this county. It’s only getting worse.

Janet, I am so sorry. It is always deeply troubling to hear about something like this, but it must rock a person to the core to have known someone who was a victim. Your community will be in my thoughts.

My heart goes out to the entire community - actually, the entire country at this point. There's no place that hasn't been affected by this epidemic of mass shootings, and as a teacher it is painful to have to teach young students what to do in case of a shooting. It is clear that they're terrified, even during the drills. I enthusiastically support your advocating for gun control (I do, too), and I have to wonder what more it will take for others to become involved, as well.

And I’ll be clear — we own a ranch, we own firearms. (I kind of hate them, but I respect that they are useful for hunting.) I am for responsible, informed gun ownership, with licensing and background checks.

The community is just devastated. Part of me wants to go into town for breakfast this morning to see my friends and be there for others who lost friends too.

Thank you for the thoughts and sentiments, all. No one wants to be the next community to be struck by this awful tide of gun violence, but it almost felt inevitable. And now it came to our beautiful little city. I'm sad, but I'm angry too. I'm sick of tragedies. I'm sick of thoughts and prayers. I'm sick of politicians who say a few words and then move along.

I got to know this reporter when he wrote an article about my husband. In the wake of the Valentines day shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas high school, my husband decided to crush his AR's (which his Texas friends and family had convinced him he *needed* when he got the ranch, to shoot hogs and coyotes -- spoiler alert: you don't need high-powered firearms to shoot a feral hog or a coyote), and made a video about it. How ironic that it was a response to gun violence that led to our friendship, and now...

I'm so sorry for your loss and heartbroken that we have yet another senseless shooting. It's painful to lose a friend needlessly. I agree that we need some sensible gun laws -- and also mental health help -- to at least reduce the numbers of these shootings.

A close friend of my son’s is moving to Annapolis, to teach this fall. I’ve known him since he was a second grader, and when I first heard about this, I immediately thought of him.

Sorry to hear that you are personally affected. A great tragedy for innocent people doing their work and hard to comprehend for a small city.

Good on your husband for making a point with his gun video. i cannot believe that there is not a solution - there is one- but compromise seems to be an impossibility in the current environment.

Oh JANET- Annapolis is such a lovely place that I visited often when my nephew was attending the naval academy. I was devastated on so many levels- I am so tired of our political leaders failing us on the issue of gun violence ( mentioned it several times on this forum), I am so angry at the open season on press - how hypocritical to call them enemy of the people then offer “ thoughts and prayers “. A free presss is vital. My heart aches for the families of dead and injured but as my husband is a big Carl Hiiason fan,the loss of his brother is especially stinging. The great people of Maryland need to know we stand with you- stay strong as we continue to fight this insanity. Condolences on the loss of your friend.

Thank you so much for all the heartfelt thoughts. I confess I’m not much in the mood for talking a lot about fashion these days, and I realize my words of frustration and anger here may rub some people the wrong way. I won’t get overtly political here, but I spent the better part of this weekend at vigils and rallies, and I will likely be connecting with that community more as I move forward.

You can’t have this happen in your circle of friends and community and remain feeling unchanged. I now know this from firsthand experience. I pray none of you have to go through this too. Thanks for all your words of solace.

I thought I’d share this excellent photo collection from the vigils here the other night. I got some of my own iPhone photos, but this photographer really captured the emotion of the event. I recognize so many of these faces, and I know some of them. That man at the podium with the glasses and the suit? That’s our friend Gavin, the mayor, whose inauguration we attended a few months ago when I shared photos of my outfits for the ceremony and ball.

Echo, I can’t imagine how surreal and disturbing it is to teach young children how to manage “active shooter” situations. I am appalled that this is what it’s come to.

I am sorry that this tragedy has hit so close for you. I was a journalist during my early career and I have many friends still in the profession. We have, as you can imagine, had robust discussions about this, and also about the general disregard and outright denigration of my profession. My brother is an educator and I have nephews in high school. And I worked at a university. These events no longer seem outside the realm of possible for me to experience personally and I wrestle with trying to not be afraid all the time.

Nebraskim, I have many friends who are journalists and people who work in broadcasting (part of my background as well), including people who work for some of the major news media outlets. I find that lately we are cautioning each other to “be careful out there.”

I was thinking today about how law enforcement officers lay their lives on the line every day for their jobs. It is sobering indeed that now it seems teachers, journalists, and others are being put in such dangerous positions, when that is not what they ever signed up for. Sad times indeed.
