Has anyone used Angie's List, I mean paid for it & found it worthwhile?
I'm home visiting Dad & I can tell he needs help with the house. I saw some promising reviews but of course you can't get more information without paying. This area is too small for Yelp.
ETA Home Advisor & Porch.com didn't yield anything.

I have found it incredibly helpful in two different cities for all kinds of services, including home repair and health care. I do read reviews to make sure the actual work that was done is relevant to what needs doing. The success I have had has prompted neighbors and family to join. Highly recommend to help your Dad get sorted.

Meh, I feel a bit ambivalent about it. I actually joined a few weeks ago and the cost is minimal (I think around $10 for the year plus they were running a 20% off promotion). At that price, might as well just go for it. I say "meh" because the contractor I was interested in using only a had a few reviews, so not all that conclusive (you might run into the same issue in a small town). I also know of someone who hired a cleaning service based on Angie's List reviews and it turned out to be a scam. I'd say it could be part of the decision-making process, but you'll still have the headache of getting quotes and running things through your bs-o-meter.

My mom has used it and found it worthwhile. She used it for sprinkler repair, pest control and handyman/odd job service and was very satisfied. She is in Texas and does live near a large city so the number of reviews/workers is usually sufficient to satisfy her needs.

We have a site here called bid my reno. I haven't used it yet but have registered. Several of the people in my area have used it for small and large items from fence post repair to window cleaning to carpet replacement.

I bought it for a minimal fee, and I didn't find it terribly useful. I didn't renew, but again, so few reviews. Word of mouth references from friends/acquaintances have been way better for me.

I needed a plumber on the weekend a couple of weeks ago and found it very usual in finding someone on the weekend.

yes, i've used it to find plumber, electrician and emergency heating repair. you can join for a month, l think its around $4, then email them to drop your membership. i do find it helpful, even though my city is big enough for yelp, i live in a college city, so not many yelp reviews on home improvement businesses.

In a bigger town (I've used it in Portland) I've found it helpful when moving into a house and getting inspections/repairs and for finding pet sitters since there are quite a few reviews and several options for each service. One thing that is also helpful is that if you use Angie's list and the service you pick turns out to be meh and your review is subsequently meh, I found some contractors really don't want a not so good Angie's List review so they contacted me and asked how they could fix it (and did) to improve their score.

I've not found Angie's List to be much better than Yelp (with all the usual Yelp caveats like look at people's other reviews if their review is extremely positive or negative). Yelp tends to have more reviews than Angie's in my limited experience, and more = better (in general).
