Angie - Your Opinion?

Angie - I think you were busy in Boston when I posted my glasses question.

I've been shopping for new specs and have been soliciting opinions. I'd love to have your comments on what you think looks good on my face. I'm looking for something that's not too fashion forward - interesting but subtle.

I'm still looking at other options, but these are some of the top contenders so far:

Sorry I missed your specs thread Tarzy and thanks for starting another one. You know how I LOVE specs!

I’d love to hear what the verdict was because I have my clear favourite. Red rectangular is very flattering. What’s your fav? I like the colour of the brown rounded but something about the shape is off. Have you tried something a little more daring, like a blue?

I agree I like both the red and the brown but feel like they need to make a bit more of a statement. I def. think a colored frame is better than rimless or wire rims.

I love the color of the rounded brown ones, but I agree there is something off.

I do like the red ones very much, and think they're a good color for me, but I worry they are too wide for my face. (I have a narrow face.)

I like the rimless because they show my eyes, but I agree that for some reason they don't look as modern on me.

Unfortunately, I know I wouldn't feel comfortable in a color like blue. Burgundy or red is probably as far as I'd go!

Hi Tarzy, I just looked at some of your glasses photos...I'm not sure if I saw the whole lot or not, but I liked the pair of light tortoise club monaco ones: http://s160.photobucket.com/al.....G_0121.jpg ...I like the way they sort of follow your brow and the color seems to make your hair color pop! But yes, something blue...or green maybe...if there is ever a place to be adventurous, specs might be the place...just giving you a gentle nudge. Maybe just take a few photos? What have we got to lose?

Tarzy, are the burgandy Burberry glasses out of the running? I looked back at that picture and I still think I prefer those to any of the ones you posted above. Of course, that's just my opinion

I'm also curious about what happened to the burgundy Burberries. They seemed to be the most popular choice. Is there a reason they're not among the finalists?

I think you should nix the rimless ones. I find them overly conservative and dull.

Tarzy, if I can be honest, I feel like you're being too timid in your choice of specs. I understand if you might not like the look of the modern angle frames, and I certainly don't want you to get them if you don't like them, but they're really not all that fashion forward. Specs are one accessory where I think it pays to be more adventurous and really make a statement, and as Judy said, you have nothing to lose by just trying them. Sometimes it really pays off to step out of your comfort zone.

I know I sound like a bit of a hypocrite based on the specs I ended up choosing, but I was restricted to buying them from my mom's doctor's office, so my choices were very limited.)

Maya - I hear you, and that's why I'm asking for everyone's opinon!

I do have a slight problem in that I have a very difficult prescription. By the time everything is said and done, my glasses usually cost around $1,000! (And that was with insurance, which I don't have anymore because I was laid off.) I can only get one pair, and I have to keep them for at least two years, so I need to find "the perfect ones!" That's one reason I was considering gong back to the ones I had before, but I'm not convinced I love them enough:

I'm doing a lot of shopping around for deals, and I am going to go to Costco tomorrow - I've heard they have some good prices.

Tarzy-Did you check to see if the Burberry frames come in a narrower version. Many frames come in different widths. Also different colors, so if you like the style of a frame ask about other color possibilities.

I got new frames earlier this year and had similar reservations about choosing something a bit out of my comfort zone. I'm 49 and didn't want to look silly, but I also didn't want to make the "safe" choice and be unhappy. I spent a lot of time looking at frames on peoples faces in magazines and on the web so I could get a feel for what was current and to adjust my eye. Then I went and tried on many frames before I found "the one". I'm so happy with my choice and glad I pushed myself. Glasses are a huge investment (mine were about $800), so I can understand your not wanting to make a mistake. Take your time and wait until you find a frame that makes you happy, the time you spend will be worth it every time you look in the mirror.

Donna - thanks. That's great advice. I'll check out the Burberry's. Those ones were at Lenscrafters at the mall, so it's very easy to pop back in and find out.

What type of frames did you end up with? What did you base your decision on? (I'm 51, so I absolutely know what you mean about not wanting to look silly. I live in a very artsy neighborhood with a lot of middle aged hipsters, and it totally works on some people, but more and more I'm leaning toward a slightly more sophisticated look for myself. But not boring! It's a fine line.)

Tarzy, I was surprised when you did not include the burgundy Burberry ones in this thread for Angie's benefit. I clearly remember the burgundy Burberry's being the preferred choice by almost everyone. I do not think they are too wide for your face. I think they look very natural on your face, like they belong there.

I am odd man out with the angled frames (the first frame in the first set of photos). I do not care for them.

Maybe it would help you if you took out all the photos of the glasses that are officially out of the running, and make a new album with all the glasses that are in the running. Set the photos us in a grid, so you can really compare one to the other. I always find this technique helpful when comparing similar items.

And for the record, the burgundy burberrys are by far with out contest my absoluste favorites!

Tarzy, I still also vote for the burgundy Burberry frames. I really like them the best and don't think they are too wide. Do ask if they come in a narrower width because you want to feel comfortable with them. If they do and that works, that would be my first choice.

Sorry, I don't know how to convert it to make it direct.

I have a roundish petite face and needed an angular frame. They are a very dark brown with a creamy colored print on the inside which I really like. It makes them a bit special without screaming "trendy". Because my face is petite, I also needed a bit more delicate frame and I'm wondering if maybe that's what's bothering you about the Burberry's. I agree with you about them being a bit wide for your face, but I also feel they might be just a bit too thick. I'm certainly no expert so take this all with a grain of salt, you have to be happy with your choice. Take your time, don't settle.

I don't find the burgundy Burberry glasses too wide or thick at all. They seem to frame your eyes the best. A lot of the other ones seem to come too low on your face, so that your eye is either cut off or jutting up against the top of the frame. The BB's give you equal space on the top and bottom. There is just no contest to me. If you want to ask if they come in a slightly narrower width because they'll make you more comfortable, go for it. If you know the style name you can even Google the glasses and see what sizes they come in. But I really think they look fine as they are and they were the clear favorite here so I would not discredit them.

Hi Tarzy. I also have the problem of glasses frames highlighting, or making my eyes look close together. It is a job finding frames that I feel comfortable looking in the mirror and not focusing on that issue. I'm pretty sensitive about it.
Somehow the frames that Judy mentioned, the light colored tortoise, shell seem to not do that to you. When I compared those with the BB it seemed that the tortoise shell have just the slightly different shape and a heavier looking edge. Do those come in Burgundy?
The ones Angie likes, ofcourse, are also a good choice. You hair color is so beautiful and you can wear a really great deep color in your frames. Enjoy that opportunity and get a great color.

Thank you, Tarzy. The Burberry is a killer colour but still not my favourite shape. It’s a little “droopier” around the outside of your eyes, but they come in a close second. The red rectangular are a better shape IMO, but the colour is not as fab. Not too wide at all. In fact, that’s precisely the shape that works! Wider frames open up the silhouette of your face. Very flattering.

I’d like to encourage you to NOT get dark brown specs. Things will get TOO brown. You have hazel eyes and dark brown hair and probably wear brown. So my suggestion would be to stay away from dark brown specs. To Maya’s point – I think you can go a little funkier. Not too funky (I hear you). But a little more personality will not hurt. If that’s out of your comfort zone, than that’s okay too. But you know how it goes around here - you’ll never know until you try because nothing ventured is nothing gained. If you wear specs, they are your MOST important accessory.

Angie - thank you so much! And thanks for explaining why the shape of the Burberry doesn't work as well - I feel better about not not loving them. And I appreciate your advice about the color. This has helped immensely!

Tarzy - the red O&X and the burberry burgundy are my 2 favorites hands down. Good luck with your decision. I have been postponing mine because it seems like a lot of hard work.
