My husband just showed me this article. When he was a kid, he used to visit his grandparents' house which was on the flight path into Kai Tak, and he remembers watching the planes come in to land. Apparently they flew in SUPER close to the rooflines.
Jennifer, I can't open the link. But my guess is that the article is about Kai Tak airport - which I know all too well, and have landed and taken off from more times than I can possibly count.
Oof! I'm one of those weirdos that actually wishes I'd flown into Kai Tak. They'd opened the new airport by the time I went to Hong Kong. To date my scariest flight has been Madeira airport. Strong crosswinds and a short runway.
If I remember I'll ask my real globetrotter friend to compare that landing to the one he told me about in Buttan (sp?). Between two mountains, no way for the pilot to know whether it is clear enough to see to land until almost on the ground. Embellished a bit or accurate?
