Angie, lets go window shopping!

I went into town and took my camera. Only one shop owner came out to ask what I was doing. I told her my Dutch friend who now is a stylist in Vancouver wanted to know what the fashion was over here and I didn't know how to tell better than with pictures and that was fine with her. I will start with these 3 shops and see how it works with the pictures that I pasted together. More will follow! I have kept the originals so if you want me to send you the originals via e-mail, send me a message.

These pictures were taken at the shops with outside windows of the main shopping centre in a suburb just south of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. A picture tells a thousand words, especially since I am not so familiar (yet?) with the nuances of fashion in English.

I know most of the shops. Looks like soft colours are big at the moment, but brights are on their way. Nautical themes are there too, as is black and white. I have always been a big Claudia Sträter fan, and you know that the Bijenkorf has my heart.

I will study the pictures further and deeper, but no flared trousers I see? Skinnies and longer skirts rule the roost. And scarves and crossbody bags are always big in the Netherlands because people commute on foot and on their bikes.

@Gingko, some of it is red (matching the white-and-red patterned skirts), some of it is an autumny-orange (Claudia Sträter).

Isn't it funny that C&A (a big clothes store in the cheaper price range) is marketing its clothes as 'American' while I am showing you a tiny bit of European fashion?
I enjoyed doing it for you Angie. Some of these shops I would never go in to but now I have looked at their clothes a little bit closer and I can see myself using some of their items.
You are right, no flared trousers. Boot cut and skinnies it is. I found it very difficult to find pants to suit my wide hips (fortunately they are less wide now so it is not that much of a problem any more).
There are many more clothes shops in our little mall, but they have inside windows and in the shopping centre, there are no camera's allowed. And since I have a large camera and an ancient mobile phone, no way of sneaking a picture here or there.

"Bootcuts and skinnies it is" - I am Dutch at heart

Both higher end and lower end shops in the Netherlands are fab. De Hema is always worth a look, as is V&D, H&M and C&A. (Hilarious that they are marketing an American look!)

I am most happy that you had fun doing this, Heleen. That's YLF's only rule that can't be broken.

I just have to pop in and say I just love the term "window shopping" For some reason it reminds me of my childhood... probably just because it is a term I remember my mom using alot. You don't hear that much anymore.

I find that I often am sorry after buying C&A clothes... Jeans have something in it that irritates my skin, winter tops are made of a synthetic fabric that makes me smell horrible even with the best deodorant.
HEMA is great for basics. I also like Expresso, although the fuchsia pink knitted dress I bought there lost its shape in my washing machine, so it is home-only now...
H&M is great for sizes under 122. Between 128 and 15/16 year old they have very little. It is a pain to find clothes for my 12 year old in our shopping centre: clothes are either too childish or too large...

This is the most fun I've had in a long time! Feels like I've seen Euro fashion through your eyes - brilliant! My overall impression is soft colors, lots of neutrals, longer, softer skirts, lots of skinnies. Lots of cream! Looks very pretty.

How wonderful and what fun! When I see neutrals like beige and cream like this (all layered, with lots of different textures and slight shade variations to keep it interesting) then the push for these colors makes some sense. But these sorts of layered looks are hard to pull off if you are real and not a mannequin, IMHO.

Some observations:

The only thing American to me about the C&A window is the traffic signs and the reds whites and blues. The styling looks very European to me!

The maternity shop clothes look fab and cool, it makes me want to be pregnant!

I am in San Francisco at the moment (short vacation). The windows and shops look more European to me than those in Los Angeles, where I was last week.

@CocoLion, I agree, it seems to be only the props that are American. I guess the dress in picture 8 could be considered a hippy dress and thus American, although the hippies were influenced by India... I went to their website and apparently the youth collection is inspired by 'the Californian dream', swimming clothes 'sunset beach', so you should totally relate to these clothes When you browse this part of the site with the arrows on the left and right, you can see clips of the C&A runways.
