Oooh, those are fun but I would have to chop off 5 inches of the hem! I may have to comb some thrift and consignment stores - I bet I can find something more stovepipe/wide leg than flared, which will be a huge waste of hem once I shorten.

Una, if you decide to try the BR's, you'll probably want to size up at least one size, maybe two. I tried them in my normal size and they were snug, so I probably would have needed to go up two to get a loose fit.

Ok, the short version:

For wide legs with straight seams, like you showed on pinterest, just get them hemmed. If you want to keep the bottoms looking the same, have the tailor reattach the original hem (usually that's $20 instead of $10). I have to get every.single.pair of pants hemmed, short lengths included, so I just see that as a normal part of buying pants, not something to be avoided.

It doesn't work on extreme flares where the knee is tight because the knee will be in the wrong place, or on jeans with moto-style panels over the knee (I had to sell my J Brand Houlihans because the seams caused actual knee pain). Otherwise, though, totally worth the extra cost.

Una, what about them has to be petite -- is it just the length, or are you looking for a shorter rise as well?

If it's just the hem, I agree that the best thing is to just get them shortened. No one seems to think that petites would wear wide leg jeans, so the pickings are slim.

The ones you posted seem like what boyfriends used to be like before BF became synonymous with "rolled hem." It does seem that the closest thing nowadays would be a trouser jean, though those tend to be a little more polished than these RATE looks.

I was going to suggest checking out American Eagle too. Their Favorite Boyfriend jeans might work. I ordered some expecting them to fit like regular boyfriend jeans, but they are quite wide through the whole leg and have a flare at the bottom.

Una and Angie, are you still conscious, or should I get some smelling salts? ;^)

Oh, I'm sorry, I totally forgot about petite rise concerns! Maybe my wide-leg hemming advice is irrelevant because of that. I have a very high rise and short legs, so I don't usually think about that.

Una, I was going too fast and linked you to the hi-rise version. They have a low rise one too. And they come in short inseams. And they are cheap. And I know ae cuts their jeans for straight hipped gals like us. If you haven't already, give their options a serious go through. I absolutely looooove my ae straight jeans that I wear as boyfriend-inspired jeans. Love them!

Haha, it seems like you get my monthly post-n-disappear, but I do have strong feelings about hemming flared jeans!

I rarely wear them, but they have survived more purges than I can count.

Anyway, I had them hemmed WITH the original hems reattached and found out that made the new hem quite stiff, and the wonderful fluid movement of flares was lost

Later I was back at Nordies for some other alteration, mentioned the jeans, they offered to redo my hems the 'other/regular' way and it improved the swish factor.

FWIW - I endorse flared jeans, but consider HOW you'd have them hemmed

With a style like this, just getting them hemmed doesn't always work. The width needs to be scaled too, or else a petite lady will look totally swamped. And if there's strategic fading, it may not land in the right spot for us....this drives me nuts and is one reason I tend to own very few jeans with fading.... cuz it just looks so weird when the faded knee is on your calf.... ha!

Anyway if this is a trend that's just beginning, then just wait a couple of years and you'll find it in petites right as the trend is peaking. Sigh.

Hmm, Una, I mentioned in Angie's thread that I think sometimes we have to ignore the label descriptions of things and just wear the thing that looks like the style we're going after. So, my example was that a "real" BF blazer swamps me completely, but a classic suit blazer in a regular length fits long on me and can be styled to look like a BF blazer.

Anyway, for you I'm wondering if you should be looking at loose straights instead of wide legs. The proportions will probably be better, and if you sized up you'd probably get the same effect.

FWIW though, I purged all my trouser jeans quite a while ago. The always felt so stiff and wide and made me feel short. But your IT shape might be able to balance them out better than my pear shape.
