I KNOW, Denise. It's killer. So elegant. And they are all over the catwalks right now too, (I am watching the Spring 2014 shows very closely for 6 weeks like I do every 6 months). Now midis *have to* filter down to mainstream retailers for affordable prices. It is ridiculous that you have to pay $800 to $1200 for a bit of length on your skirt with a decent lining.

I tried on two midis at Nordies yesterday, and came home with one.

Angie, you have been so way ahead of the curve on this one.

I have a midi from the 90s, but it's a pencil skirt. The NYFW pictures are inspiring me to pull it out! It's from Romeo Gigli, whatever happened to him?

ETA -- lest you think I still have all of my better clothes from the 90s, I don't! I just hung on to the more classic ones. But yeah, I am a bit of a hoarder!

Love 'em all. I think I keep my midriff covered, however. I leave that for fashion week! I had a skirt much like #3 in the early 90s and loved it. I wore it with tights to debombshell it.

# 1 and 4 look good, and #5 I would call more like knee. #'s 2, 6 and 7 seem a bit long to actually be called mid calf. Guess I am wrong to think mid calf actually means falling in the middle of the calf, the largest part of leg. According to a blog I found the area between about 1" below knee, and a couple of inches above ankle is called "danger zone" by the capri haters. Also some fashion experts call the mid calf boots very difficult to wear, and stress one should wear tights, pants, or something same color as the boots so as not to cut off the leg length look.
Is one supposed to wear high heels with these skirt lengths, since visually cutting off leg length is a "bad' thing?

Skirts that just cover the knee are also being referred to as midis - and not knee-length.

Oldmsthrifty, you can wear flats with midis too.

This is a godsend. I've been trying to accept my job reality: I do not have a job where I'm either behind a desk or walking around. I have a job where I sit in a chair and talk to people sitting across from me for much of the day (no desk intervening). And my favorite top-of-the knee length, in pencil or sheath shapes, hikes up more than I ever want to admit when I'm sitting. Especially when I'm not paying attention, and work is not paying me to be thinking about my skirt all day.

Adelfa, you describe a great reason to wear a midi! OldMrsThrifty, thanks for weighing in. For whatever reason, the term "midi" is pretty loose these days, as Angie described it's anything below the knee but not a maxi.

Angie it's true retail is behind on this one! I searched "midi skirts" on my favorite fashion site (as we all know!) Shopbop and only 33 items came up. When I searched mini skirt 290 came up.

I was watching E! TV the other day (guilty!) and they did a feature on how to style a midi skirt so the stylists in LA are behind it too (California being long associated with minis).

LOVE longer skirt lengths. Too bad they are still tricky to find in stores. Almost all the dresses I see are still above the knee or barely at it, but then again it might take a while for trends to hit the middle of the country as opposed to the coasts.

Ooh, I want to try a version of #6 with my blue trumpet midi, handknit sweater, and platform sandals. Only thing is, if it's cold enough to wear a handknit cabled sweater, it's definitely not warm enough for sandals.

I LOVE #7, but I'd never be comfortable showing that much skin on top. The problem is that I think the skimpy top is what keeps the whole thing looking cute and current, instead of frumpy. Maybe if I went with some kind of open weave meshy top or sweater over a tank, I could still pull it off?

these are all really pretty - but for me personally, I can't see myself wearing most of the ones pictured - they just way too volumnous for my frame, unless I wear a heeled shoe - which I would not necessarily want to do. The only exception would be #3 - I don't think that style would swallow me up like the others!

I just counted my midiskirt collection. I have 18 midi skirts, including both summer and winter ones, all purchased over the last 4 years, the last one only 3 weeks ago. (This does not include my midi-length dresses)
I can thank my love of vintage, and my issues with my knees, for finding myself waaay ahead of the trend curve, LOL!

This is fab news, Denise. Yesterday, I found that Vince Camuto has a black ponte knit midi skirt now (not the tube skirt). This could be an ideal work basic and I think it will find a place in my closet.

Ah, geez. I'm mentally wringing my hands now. I love the look of every one of those midis on the original post except #2. They look easy and flowy and so refreshing to the shorter skirt length that we've had for what feels like forever.

But I don't look like any of those women. And skirts that length make me look stumpy...hiding my best asset (legs) and highlighting my biggest challenge (short waist). Bah.
