An outfit fail. Hi low top with high waisted jeans

I kept this jumper against ylf advice because I missed the return window. It looks ok with a longer shirt under and with a pencil skirt. These are the only pair of jeans highwaisted enough to wear without tummy revealing but it doesn't work.
The top is loose around the waist by the way.
Please help me work out why.

Hmm, Anne, I think this outfit looks really good! What makes you unhappy about it? Or does it look different when you have your hands down, since they are up to hold the camera?

If the top is loose around the waist, maybe you'd want to wear a black cami underneath so that no skin shows when you move around.

Anne to me the overall look isn't current. Is that what is throwing you? I can see this sweater working with a slightly full skirt or a Highwaisted wide leg pant.

I agree with Deborah. I think looser, more fluid bottoms would work better with the jumper, with or without a longer top layered underneath.

Caro, it looks ok with a shirt under.

Gigi the issue with the looseness was that it made me feel blocky. But any shorter rise jeans would expose my muffin top.

I'm so confused... to me this is a very current look. High waisted + cropped top, and just flattering enough. This is THE look right now, isn't it? It's all over the stores here in the US.

If you are hoping for more than "just flattering enough" then I would pair the jeans with a longer top that hits at high hip. And pair the sweater with a high waisted pencil skirt, or pop a button down shirt underneath it, or try it with culottes or wider trouser styles.

That sweater is absolutely adorable. Huge love for the huge polka dots!

I wonder how that sweater, or cropped sweaters in general, would work over a dress?

Hi Shiny, yes it looks good with the first few styles you have mentioned. I haven't yet tried it with culottes (don't own any) or wider trousers (currently trying to decide if I should turn my one pair into skinnies!) Will have to try it out with a dress. And yes I too thought that it was supposed to be a current look!

High waisted tight jeans tend to be paired with much looser cropped jumpers for a current effect.

Try the jumper with some of your cute skirts, Anne.

Interesting discussion. I would never have guessed that the look was not current.

I like Shiny's idea about putting the jumper over a dress. That would solve the muffin top issue nicely plus eliminate exposure of skin due to the cropped hem on the top.

I like it with the dress. I think it would look great with some black shoes.

I like the jumper in pic 2, with the looser hem, as opposed to in pic 5, where you've made it more fitted.

Thanks Gigi. I think it looks alright too, now I have seen the photos. However I didn't like how it looked in a half mirror (I didn't look in a full one) and so didn't wear it, or look at the photos til I was on my way out for the morning.

I not very happy with my weight (up above my normal range) atm, and this is affecting how I see my outfits.

Although I was about to comment on how slim you look, I understand that it is all about how we view ourselves. If you are not happy with where you are at the moment, then that is how you feel.

From over here you look fab. The dress seems too formal office-y for the fun smart casual sweater. Do you have a jersey skirt?
