An interesting comment re: personal style vibes

Last night at the CAbi party, another gal and I tried the exact same combination. It was a printed tank and blush worklike jacket. I had on my floral jeans, and the other woman may even have been pants-less. The hostess (my good friend) said to the other woman, "You look like you're off to take charge at a professional business meeting." To me, she said, "You look like you're off to party at a hip 80s concert."

We both found this SO interesting! Is it because my friend know us both and our respective personalities? The other woman was probably my age, much more "classic" in the outfit she wore to the party, with a nice but kind of (I don't know how to put this otherwise) meh haircut.

Did we try once here to see how different people look in the same outfit? It's fascinating to contemplate. Any thoughts?

I love the description "meh" haircut; I can see it now While your personalities may have something to do with it, hair, face shape, body type all suggest different things. That's why so much of the NaturallyCurly.com discussions are about the discriminatory attitude that professional = straightened hair.

I think it is fascinating. I found some model pics of the coat I'm trying (but in a different colour). Check the different vibes!

EDIT: I can see from looking at my own pics that although body type plays into it bigtime, there are also very different style vibes in these pics! So you definitely give off your own style, as does your friend.

I would love to see how different people on YLF look in the same outfit. If there is a thread like that I would love to get a link to it. Is it possible since so many people have the same items? I know it's always super interesting to me to see how other people on YLF style the same items I have.

I know at one point we discussed everyone's version of jeans and a white shirt. But in this case it was not anyone's version of an idea or how it was styled, it was literally the exact same items worn the same way.

I'm racking my brains to think of items several of us have and could all wear in a thread here! Halogen skirts, of course. What else?

I keep saying, in not so many words, that it's body language. One's stance towards oneself. Expectations of oneself. This other women was probably buying work clothes. You were possibly resigned to buying some work clothes but you love your off duty self and that wardrobe.

I like the idea of this challenge, Una! And I think they don't need to be exactly the same items (that would be pretty limiting) but the same style.
E.g. the following formula: "bright blazer, denim shirt and skinnies". Or "patterned pants and patterned top". A lot of us have similar items in these categories so we can get a lot of outfits to look at.
Or we can specify one part of the outfit and let the rest to be "free style" like: "bright pencil skirt" or "skinnies and flat oxfords".

Fascinating observation, Una. I think the thread would be a blast! It's very interesting to see what personality, style, etc. we each bring to our clothes.

Okay, when I have more time and brainpower I will be posting a new thread on this. Maybe two possible outfits - casual and dressy, and have everyone post on the same thread so we can compare.

Yep, you're on to something. We all give off completely different vibes. Remember that site we were all looking at in January where we took a quiz about our hair, features and body types? I can't remember what it was, but Sveta came out as a "Soft dramatic" type and it made so much sense. I was just thinking the other day about how much my WASP-y looking features determine the direction my outfit vibe goes in. Oh well, I can't fight the way i look, so I might as well go with it. :/

this is very interesting indeed! I was in the military for almost 10 years and it was interesting how my first impression skills were much more honed then when everyone looked more alike than now when I can use clothes/hairstyle as a crutch. Also thinking the proposed comparison thread sounds like great fun.

Hee hee - I can't help but think in all these examples I'm an outlier! Oxfords, nope. Pencil skirt - nope. Patterned pants - nope. Bright blazer - nope. Denim shirt - nope. And on and on. But I don't mind a bit! I think it must say something that I don't have any of these YLF looks.
I do recall listing the many variations of the 'lemming look' on the board in a post late last year though . . . maybe I can find that.

I'm with you Mo don't think I have any of the YLF looks you describe except for my newly purcased pencil skirt and that was definitely a YLF inspired purchase. It shoud be fun to see how evryone brings their personal vibe to the same clothing items. The copycat challenge kind of does that too.

#2, I LOOOOOOVE this idea of a YLF copycat or simply "style the same item in your own way" challenge, both the "item" version and the "outfit formula" version. We have to do this!!

#3, Claire, I am with you..my looks make it all seem so ladylike unless I rough it up on purpose. And that was always hard for me to figure out before YLF. SO grateful to be learning here from all of you and from Angie.
