So I came upon this article on Huffington Post. Being a woman who straddles straight & plus size & tall sizes, I am accustomed to alterations. I've also gone the route of custom-made clothing on several occasions, as I like pretty specific things, in terms of color and texture. I also grew up with a mother and a grandmother who were fantastic with needle & thread or sewing machine. I did not, unfortunately, develop as much skill, but I did develop a high standard for fit and an intolerance for uncomfortable clothing.

Right now, I have two dresses that I'm thinking of cutting down into tops, since I wear a dress less than once a year. I regularly have things hemmed, have sleeves altered, pants tapered, etc.

I see only occasional mentions of tailoring & alterations here. I'm wondering if I'm missing these conversations, or if this is less common? I think I'm normal, but who knows?

What kind of changes do you make to clothing? Or if it's not perfect off the rack, do you just wear it like that? Or not buy it at all? When all is said & done, do you keep clothing that has been professionally altered (or if you have the skill) longer than other pieces?
