Alteration question for the sewers...

Hello to all of the talented sewers out there. I'm hoping you might share a word or two of advice about how much of a job it might be to have the sleeves of a blazer re-lined.

I was thrift shopping this afternoon -- thinking I might try a men's blazer to play around with truly oversized in a low risk way. I found a nice navy blazer that would have come home with me except that the lining of the sleeves was badly stained and coming unsewn at the cuffs.

How feasible might it be to have the sleeves relined? TIA for any insight you can offer!

It depends. It's not that hard to replace the sleeves in a lining, generally. But how the hem attaches at the sleeve makes a difference. If there are vents, it is harder (and I don't know how to do it, but I'm no alterations expert, nor do I sew tailored garments often). If the sleeve has a simple hem, it's easier. If you are okay with the sleeve lining not being attached, except by a little thread chain at each side, it's not hard at all.

Thanks, Sharan! That's good to know. I would probably prefer the lining attached as I would be likely to roll the sleeve back, but I do recall seeing or having jackets with this kind of loose tacked situation... I should have taken photos for reference, but I don't think this sleeve had a vent.

The cost might be more than what you paid for the jacket itself . Matching the lining colour might also be an issue. As Sharan said , it’s not super difficult for an experienced tailor but the sleeve opening will be tricky .

To me, it would be easier to reproduce and insert a new sleeve lining than alter various parts of a blazer. If it has a buttoned vent, as Firecracker describes, it could be done by leaving the lower part as is, and replace from about 3/4 length up. But for real diagnosis and prescription, it’s best to ask your local tailor if they would even do that job.

I agree with Firecracker. There are a few things to consider but it is a relatively easy fix especially if the jacket is of a quality that is worth it . You have a head start with the cuffs unraveling...lets you know what is going on inside.
If it is a quality vintage piece (good fiber, well done tailoring.) it is worth looking into..do you sew?

Lisa, you're right -- I'm sure it would cost much more than the jacket, which, if I recall, was $9.99. The sleeve is currently lined with white, and, were I having it replaced, I would probably have it done in in navy so there wouldn't be a lot of contrast when I rolled the sleeve back.

CJH --It's actually the lower part that needs to be replaced. It is fraying/shredding away right where the lining attached at the cuff. Maybe replace just the lower third? (grasping at straws!)

I don't sew, Indigoprint. Well, I once sewed a very simple pillow cover, LOL.

Given the cost of the jacket, I just wonder if there is a reasonably low cost hack that could make it more wearable. It's not any kind of high end piece, but it is a very sturdy, hardwearing fabric (I'm sure in a poly blend) and I generally liked the fit and colour. Just not so much the sleeve lining. There will be others if this one doesn't work out...
