So I think I missed the original reference. But Gaylene's comment in Una's recent WIW struck a nerve with me. I decided to start a separate thread as to not further derail that one.
Yes, among my friends I am known as The one with ALL the shoes. Hello, shoecase. But it is not the sum total of my entire personality or life. I work in a very serious job that is decidedly not glamourous, scrubs everyday and often deal with nasty and gruesome scenarios. I see bad stuff all the time.
But funny thing is, the nurses on my floor notice my shoes, and often look for me when I'm going home in street clothes. But also I am respected at the hospital. I do not think an interest in fashion precludes intelligence.
I also am dealing with real issues in my non-work life.
But, my crazy shoes have actually increased my social circle, because people notice them. I don't talk about fashion incessantly, but will happily do so when asked. Most of my friends aren't interested in fashion, with the exception of Jenava.
So if I'm perceived as a fashion "caricature", on first glimpse...without even talking to me, well frankly that speaks more about you than. You are judging by someone's looks alone.
Seattle is not known as a fashion capitol. I stand out and I accept that. I often tread the same streets as Angie, and I know for a fact she stands out too. What is wrong with standing out a bit? Defying the norm. I'm not harming anyone. Not everyone wants to let their freak flag fly, but why cut down the tall poppy? Okay that was very cliched..but you get the drift.
