L'Oreal Double Extend. It's in a red and white tube. It's tube mascara that you wash off with warm water. I work 10 hours days and it doesn't budge.

My trick: getting my lashes tinted at the salon. I hate messing with mascara but I sure like the look, so I've started getting lash tints every 4-6 weeks and have been super happy with that.

I'm curious to see the answer to this question too... mascara is pretty much the only makeup I want to wear, and I don't wear it that often precisely because I haven't found a really good one yet. When I do wear mascara I use maybelline great lash waterproof (the cheapo kind in the pink tube from the drugstore). I do find it a little clumpy though and it's a pain to get off at the end of the night but it mostly doesn't give me raccoon eyes. I have basically NO bottom eyelashes, so any mascara I put on the top lashes is basically touching my face at all times. I also wear specs and it's really gross to have mascara stains on the insides of the lenses! Non-waterproof is definitely not an option for me.

Anna, that's good to know, and I can probably get it locally rather than having to order it.

Antje, I actually have fairly dark lashes, I just like to give them a bit of definition with mascara. I've tried using an eyelash curler, but my lashes are either too short, or I just don't know how to use the fool thing.

Diana, I'm looking forward to brand recommendations. I've tried lots of drugstore brands in the past, though never any expensive ones, and was never very impressed with anything I had tried.

I'm using CoverGirl's LastBlast Length mascara, and I really like it. My lashes seem longer, it's not clumpy.

I wonder if the smudging is partly about mascara, but also partly about undereye makeup? If you have oily skin (or emollient concealer or moisturizer) maybe a tiny bit of powder would help?

Also, since I look ridiculous with mascara on my lower lashes, I tend to use a tiny bit of black gel/cream eyeliner along the lower lashline. Works nicely for me, and stays put.

I like the Lancome Defencils line as well as Laura Mercier for a basic, everyday mascara. Both brushes are relatively small which helps with application.
But, I agree, if smudging/running is your problem, it may be more of an issue with skincare and less with mascara. Once on, it really shouldn't go anywhere. Of course, make sure not to touch your eyes during the day.
I'd hit up your local Sephora, if you have one. They usually have an entire display of their bestseller mascaras and you can demo all the different brushes to see what you like.

I can totally recommend Blinc http://www.blincinc.com/ I have very sensitive eyes and most mascaras make my eyes water and if I do find one that doesn't the eye make up remover is the next problem!! Blinc forms waterproof tubes around your lashes which last all day with no smudging and flaking and seriously does come off with just water and a washcloth! x

Love DiorShow! I tried drugstore mascara for YEARS and hated every clumpy tube...it was worth the $$ to try a dept store brand.

I haven't found anything to beat Clinique's curling lashes mascara. I can't remember the specific name of the mascara, but it's from Clinique and is the curling one. It doesn't smudge at all and comes off pretty easily in the shower or with a facial cleanser. I hate it when waterproof mascara pulls my eyelashes out trying to get it off at night.

I posted about this a bit ago, after my go-to mascara got discontinued, Neutrogena wax-free (sigh). I got some good recommendations - I went to Sephora and tried their own brand waterproof mascara, but it smeared on me too although at least it wasn't clumpy like most of them.

drugstore.com happened to be having a sale and I tried the Rimmel Extra Super Lash while I was making an order. So far I've been really pleased; it can occasionally clump a little on application but can be cleaned up easily, and most importantly it doesn't end up smeared underneath my eyes like so many of the others.

I got Blinc after reading about it here and it is great. No racoon eyes at all and it comes off very easily. It does not do a whole lot of lash-boosting but I don't know if that is because of the mascara itself or the way I am applying it.

ETA: Since you are looking for just definition and not volume, I think you will like Blinc.

Thanks, ladies, for all the recommendations! I agree that some of my issue may be skin care products (I use a Neutrogena eye cream after cleansing and before makeup), but I'm not willing to forego moisturizing the eye area in order to wear mascara. I'm hoping to find something that will allow me to continue to moisturize, so I'll shop armed with the list of products you all have mentioned!

I'm a big fan of the Lancome mascaras, and they often come on special with a bonus make-up remover. I replace mine every 6 months, in July and in December. Easy to remember

I have used Maybelline's Great lash for years (pink tube, green top). Recently my sister purchased L'Oreal Voluminous Million lashes (big, fat, gold tube). It really does separate the lashes nicely and they do appear to multiply.

I HATED that about regular mascara -- drove me crazy. Blinc has solved what I thought was an unsolvable problem for me. It's great if you don't mind an unconventional mascara. It coats your lashes with tiny tubes, and they wash off at night with your cleanser and water...looks like tiny spiders in the sink. I much prefer that to oily removers anyway. I hope you find a solution that works for you.

I'm another Maybelline Great Lash user. It's affordable, readily available, and looks great. My eyes are fairly sensitive and Great Lash never makes them water or feel sore.

I have very long, very light colored eyelashes. I like Bare Minerals Flawless Definition mascara and Clinique High Impact Mascara. In the drugstore L'Oreal Voluminous has always done well for me.

OT for you pros if you don't mind a hopefully short highjack
---I have white eye lashes growing amongst the regular ones. These white ones seem to spin--weird I know but they do not want to play nice with the other ones (who grow more like hockey sticks than graceful archs). Does mascara keep your lash hairs in check and in shape? I have only ever had mascara on twice and have no idea about it and only wondered if it might help my annoying lashes tonight after reading this post.

Patty, the eyelashes fall out and are replaced approximately every 4 weeks, and if they grow in a different direction to the others the replacement usually does, too. You might find that an eyelash curler gets them all in line for a short time? Do be careful if you feel any irritation - sometimes the ones that are growing differently can irritate the cornea. If they do, your optometrist can gently remove them for you (just the problem one!) and you will probably need to return every 4 weeks or so to have it done again. Hope this helps..

Just wanted to chime in with my recommendation for Covergirl's Lash Blast. It doesn't irritate my contacts.

I once read a tip to wear longer false lashes at the outer corners to make the eyes appear bigger. I don't wear false lashes, but I did try applying more mascara at the outer corners and I think it works.

I love Shiseido Nourishing mascara base. The Shiseido mascara is also good, but the mascara base makes cheaper drugstore mascara work great. The base defines my lashes and holds the mascara all day. Most importantly to me, I can curl my lashes and the curl holds. It's pricey but worth it to me.

I have to second the recommendation of Shiseido's mascara base. I've tried others, but this one works best and doesn't flake. For mascaras, I like Covergirl Lash Blast, YSL's Effet Faux Cils and my new fave, Armani's Eyes to Kill.
