Alaskan cruz fashion advice needed

Hi, Angie.

I am 55 years old, 5'4 inches tall and my measurements are: bust-43; waist-37 1/2; and hips-45.

I'm having trouble recognizing what figure type I am. I have a muffin top tummy.

I've been fitted for bras at JC Penneys and Macy's but they don't seem to minimize or hold the "girls" up.

I'm going on a cruz to Alaska in August and I'm trying to figure out how I can look stylish yet casual during the day and glamorous for the formal dinners (2).

I'd also like advice on what type of jacket to bring along. I'd prefer one with a hood so that I won't have to carry an umbrella if it rains. I live on the Oregon coast, so the jacket will come in handy.

I usually wear sneakers but would like to buy some stylish yet comfortable walking shoes for the cruz.

Any advice that you can offer would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Would you feel comfortable posting a photo of yourself, F? (I'll call you F for fab!) Preferably in a fitted top and fitted pants? It would be much easier to figure out your body type (measurements can be the same for 2 people, but they can have different shapes). You don't have to post your face if you don't want.

I've had friends who've gone on Alaskan cruises and I've heard nothing but great things--I think you'll have fun!

Do you have a photo of yourself on your computer? Taken with a digital camera or scanned in or something?

Yes, I have pictures from my digital computer saved on my laptop.

Okay...try this. Go to http://www.photobucket.com, and then you will have to register an account with an e-mail address. Click "Join Now." Once you've done that and you have access to your account, log in and go to "My album." There should be a box or something that says, "Upload images and Video." Click the "Browse" button and it will go to your list of computer files you have on your computer. Find that file you posted above, and double click it. It should begin uploading to your album. Once you've done that and it says "Image uploaded!", then click "Return to Album." Under your photo, there should be three lines. Click the line that says, "Direct Link" and then paste it into this reply box. That should make it so we can see it (and we won't be able to see any of the other photos in your album if you use the "direct link").

I went on an Alaska cruise in August 2 years ago. Let me just say it was colder than I expected. Any outfit you decide on should keep you covered. It was also more casual than I expected. Smart casual is perfect. Except for the two "formal" dinners where you can kick it up a notch. But if I were to go again (and I may some day!) I would bring warmer stuff and more smart casual stuff for dinners. The day trips into towns are VERY casual. Fleece, jeans, treking shoes, rain gear. Enjoy the trip...I am so envious!

Hi F., regarding the fit of your bra, do consider going to Nordstrom to get fitted. They do the best job for sure. You don't need to buy your bra there, but get your measurement and the tips on what to look for when buying bras.

Regarding shoes for day trips, have you considered fashion sneakers (e.g. Converse)? Otherwise, I'd check out some of the comfort shoe brands like Naturalizer, Ecco, Naot etc. (let me know if you want more pointers to brands.) You could order a few pairs from an online shoe store (e.g. zappos.com, which does free shipping both ways) and see what you like and what fits well. That might be your best choice, since yes, the cruise tends to be quite casual and you want to wear comfy foot wear for the day trips.

Marlene is right - make sure you take enough warm things. I went in August, too, and while there were nice days (incl. some were we used the pool) there were plenty of occasions where I wore sweaters/cardis, both on board and during the day trips. Layering is key - which I imagine you're well familiar with if you live in Oregon.

Alaska is beautiful, you'll have a great time!!

Some great stores to find comfortable shoes: Romax, Walking Company, Shoe Advantage. The Seattle area has physical stores for these companies but I'm sure you can find stuff online as well. Good luck!

Ooo what part of AK is your cruise doing? I'm orignally from there (born and raised for 20 years)! They've had a pretty rainy summer so far there. August might be better but since you will be on the water it will probably still feel cold to you.

Layering is def. the key as said above. Cardigans will be your friend. I hope you have a great time!
