AJ - What to wear with green velvet jacket

I bought the green velvet jacket at J.Crew during the personal shopper promotion in the late summer. Now that it is cool enough to wear the jacket, I am having difficulty figuring out what to wear it with.

My white button-down shirt looks too stark with the green (which has a gold tinge) so I tried it with a few cream and brown tops that I have. I don't know if my eye hasn't adjusted to this style on me or if I don't have the right kinds of tops. Any advice on what kind of top to wear with this jacket would be greatly appreciated.

I like it with both cream and brown tops. I would also try it with your wine Leo&Sage top.

My favorite of those four options was the third one--brown turtleneck dark jeans.

I prefer it with dark colors over the cream--both tops and pants.

It would look beautiful with black, maroon or maybe plum. Do you have any tops that are black and cream print? That might work well. I also think there might a perfect shade of yellow for it too--sort of mustard but not too muddy. That shade of green has a lot of yellow in it.

Beautiful jacket, looks great on you! I like the lighter tops much better than the darker ones. I think you just need a necklace (maybe with burgundy red tones?) and the look would be perfect. As it is it looks just a little "bare".
I'd still love to see the jacket over a button down as well.

Great jacket! I like it better with cream tones. The first picture is my favorite. I agree with Antje. A necklace in burgundy, amber, rich chocolate brown would look great.

The sugestion of trying it with your wine Leo&Sage top seems very good.

OK, AJ...I just looked at my jacket (same one as you) to help you figure out colors. I've worn a berry cardigan with it, a cream ruffle blouse, a white button down shirt and a grey shirt (not sure that it was the best color for it, but anyway). Look at the ribbon they've put around the lining as well...lilac and a yellow (as Nicole mentioned) would work. Also, the persimmon, honey glaze and maize colors that J Crew has now will also work. I think the guava color (in the J Crew Kelly shirt) might work well too (I saw a model at the store with this jacket, a white shirt and a necklace that had the guava/persimmon color in it and it looked sharp). I'm not sure about teal or a dark blue but you could give those a look too. Rusty reds would work as well. I can take some pictures if you'd like so you can see how these items look (just let me know).

Thanks everyone for the color ideas. I was really stuck trying to figure out what might go with this green so I appreciate such a wide variety in your suggestions. I needed to get my brain unstuck. There's seems to be an equal split between those who prefer it with the dark top and those who prefer it with the light top!

Dani - I thought you had the same jacket -- I'd love to see photos of how you are wearing it. You are good at mixing colors, something I'll still learning.

That is a great fall jacket and it looks fab on you. I like it best with the brown turtleneck, but the cream was good too and gave it a different look.
How about adding a long scarf? I could see a charcoal grey scarf with the cream top rather than a color so as not to detract from the beautiful color of the jacket.
With the brown top something rusty toned or gold as mentioned before would be beautiful.

Another thing you could try - a bit bolder colourwise - is a button-down shirt in a bright blue like this one:

I have a hunch it could work with the green. It's an even brighter blue in reality, and I would never have thought it would suit me (I usually wear cool but more subdued colours), but it does. (I actually got complimented on it twice in one day). So it's worth a try even if you don't usually wear this shade of blue.
(warning: it did shrink a little in the wash)

I like the first look best. I agree with those who said you just need some type of necklace or scarf to tie it all together. Nice jacket!
