I took a bump for a later flight so I have a couple of hours to people watch at the airport. There are two kinds of style for people who fly:
1. Those that understand they are in public
2. Those who seem to think they are somehow invisible and therefore can wear their pajamas/bumming around clothes.

Yes you want to dress for comfort but people take that way too literally. You can at least wear a bra and brush your hair, right? There are comfortable shoes besides white Reeboks too.

I have seen several groups of families who seem to think their plane is landing literally on the beach. Bathing suits, flip flops, ad sunglasses! It is not even 50 degrees in Chicago.

Those that have dressed well, however, are looking GREAT. I am taking notes on some of these styles. Interestingly most are women in their 30-40s. They look comfortable and classy. Brava!

For the record I am in jeggings (!!), a tee shirt dress, a denim jacket and Me Too flats. Double deniming it, alert the media!

Ugh, it's the worst when you take an international flight. Once you land at your foreign destination, it becomes shamefully easy to win a rousing game of "spot the Americans."

Kristen, your outfit sounds comfy yet cute. Perfect! Even for 7am flights I try to look presentable, mixing comfy pants with a nice sweater, a dress and leggings like you did, etc. I, too, have seen some really stylish people in the airport and try to emulate that. You just never know who you are going to see - do you really want to be in your pajamas?

Kristen, I have the same go-to travel outfit! My "jeggings," tunic dress of some sort, flats or boots, and a big yummy scarf if it's cold. You FEEL like you are wearing pajamas, but you don't LOOK like you're wearing pajamas. It is amazing what some people deem appropriate to wear in public.

LOL, Kristen! I love people watching at the airport, too! My favorite is people who literally bring their bed pillow and blankets on the road. They are generally also in PJs.

Ugh, PJs and pillows do not need to be in public. I think it's kind of gross.
I always fly in jeans and a knit top with either a jacket or cardigan. Layers, layers. And easy shoes.
I even don tinted moisturizer, blush, and a dab of mascara.
Other people have to look at me.

Here we dress well to travel, dresses and cardigans or jeans and trench coat, scarfs and, of course sun glasses.

Unfortunately the grand USofA doesn't seem to understand that it is okay to look presentable when travelling.

It is an interesting phenomenon b/c it *really* does not take that much more effort to slip into what you have on than the aforementioned pj's. Even if one makes the cost argument, many comfortable but still decent items can be found second hand or for under $5 on clearance at TJ Maxx and Target. So there is not an excuse. I really just don't get it. I just feel so gross when I'm dressed sloppily. It's not even so much about others - it literally affects my day if I am sloshing about in sweats.

Where did you get your jeggings? That word is fun to say.

*giggle* I had fun checking out the fashions at McCarren last weekend when we flew.

I wore skinnies, denim tunic, multi-strand pearls, and flats one way. Coming home I wore a denim shirt dress, scarf, and boots. I felt fab whether I looked it or not! (I know my hair didn't on the way home. LOL)

I usually opt for my looser fitting jeans and LAYERS. I'm flying overnight to Italy this fall though and will have one of those seats that completely reclines into a bed. I'm not sure what I'll wear then.

Eep and eeek to those wearing pyjamas in public! Oh god, why would you do that?!

I wear dresses and flats when I fly. It's so much easier to layer then for air conditioning and colder weather.

Yes, I have seen jammies too...:( usually groups of teens though...they are most certainly sleep deprived after spring break or whatever.

Ok, once in a while I come back from the beach and schlep through the airport in my hoodie if my flight's at 6 am. But my hoodie's pretty decent looking and at least I wear clean pants.

Seriously though, I used to be a bit of a slob. YLF has reformed me, the last time I flew I wore a cardigan and throw a colorful scarf around my neck. Even if I go the grocery store I find myself throwing on a jacket instead of a hoodie and ballet flats instead of flip flops. Sigh...

If I could see, I know I would be a varacious people watcher...and I'd probably get run out of town because I wouldn't be able to contain my laughter! Pajamas? Seriously? A little pride, please.
This has motivated me to really up my game for when I flly next week, though...Thanks!

You mention the women 30-40 years old who look really pulled together; any outfits that stood out for you? I'm often at a loss for airplane clothes and love getting inspiration by hearing about what other women wear to look sharp/ feel comfy on flights. Your outfit sounds genius!

Michelle- I'll bet you're a great people "listener" I would imagine you can sit in an airport and catch all sorts of crazy conversations (and based on the conversation figure out how the speaker is most likely dressed!)

Ha ha. I play this game all over the place, but the airport is probably one of the best places for it. But more than anything, I really like to pay attention to the people who stand out and see if there ideas I can steal.

Once a year, I go visit my sister sans kids and I haven't yet seen pajamas or bathing suits at the airport. So sorry you had to experience that, KristenKP!!

I usually wear jeans and a sweater, but last October, I thought I would take it up a notch:

Someone should start a site with photos of airline passengers like the one on people who shop at Walmart. That one is a hoot and unfortunately so true.

Don't get me started on this one:)

My dad is a retired airline pilot and so 90% of the flying I've ever done has been for free. One of the requirements though, is that there's a dress code. Up until recently, men had to wear a coat and tie. :O

The last time I flew on dad's passes, I wore a skirt, tights and 3" heels. This was on an overnight international flight. Maybe it's all those years of dressing up to fly, but I don't mind it. As a matter of fact, I think the magic Nine West dress would be a fab and very comfortable option on a plane compared to a ratty pair of jeans:)

I used to be paranoid about what I wore on planes. Not in a fashion sense, but a survival sense. I read that it's best to wear only natural fibers, because synthetic fibers melt when exposed to heat and can burn you if there was an accident. Rubber and synthetic soles of shoes can melt too.

Now with two kids I have other things to worry about regarding dressing for flights, but the wearing of natural fibers is always in the back of my mind.

I know what you mean. I just flew to Sweden via Heathrow and the guy next to me on the long haul flight was in sweats. I always wear layers because I'm always freezing on the plane. I used to wear shoes that are easy to take off but this time I wore the shoes that were bulkiest to pack - Paul Green ankle boots. The thing I forgot is that my feet swell up when flying so the boots were a little uncomfortable when landing - however, I just didn't zip them up and I was ok. Also once I started moving a bit, I got the circulation back and it wasn't a biggie. On the other end of the continuum, for some reason, I also feel uncomfortable with people who over dress on planes - this time there was a woman with oodles of gold, leather/pleather (?) leggings, a full dark suit, and too much makeup. It felt almost like she was hoping for a cute co-passenger who she could pick up? It's a toss up for me between that and the sweats ....

Loved reading all these replies! I am on my way home tonight so I will post if there are more tragic outfits. I am again in leggings, one of my Kohls dresses and a cute black canvas Talbots cropped jacket I picked up at a consignment store with my sister this weekend. Pictures to come soon!
