I thought this was interesting article on airport outfits. I always almost try to dress well and also be comfortable when traveling. I remember one experience on Virgin Airlines where our seats were overbooked, and the flight attendant actually mentioned that the couple ahead of were not properly dressed for first class and we looked nice, so she bumped us up. Wow. First impressions are everything.

Thanks for the article. I think it has some good points and is generally how I dress to travel. I want to be comfortable but not sloppy.

@Laura1975 - I do remember because I thought I was dressed too casual: i had on a pair of black pants, black flats, and a print cotton button up. Apparently, the others had on shorts and flip flops, etc.

@Sara L. - I know someone (family member) who dresses very sloppy which for me is a pet peeve: think yoga pants/cullottes, flip flops, and an old tee. How can anyone take you seriously?

Funny that leggings and a sweatshirt are "acceptable". Not in my book... LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS!

All I can think is: I’d never wear jeans on a plane. Well, I don’t wear jeans anyways. It says ‘stomachache’ to me. And no accessories like jewelry... going thru security, what a pain....

I second Elizabeth P: LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS!

Also with Rachy. With the increase in security, I wear nothing metal, including jewelry. Shoes need to be slip-ons with no metal shoelace holders. No belts. No clothes with zippers.

The underwires in my bra set off the detectors in India every time, but I can't find a bra in my size without them, sooooo

Interesting article. Thanks to UmmLila for the link. (Unfortunately, the link provided by you, citygirldc, didn't quite work for me. It just took me to a place where I need to register in order to read articles, and I don't feel a need to do that.)

I agree that ideal airport outfits are chic, polished, decent, comfortable and practical. However, I don't agree with such suggestions as distressed denim, sweatshirt + leggings, and tracksuits. And I have seen pj-like suits which look much more elegant and polished than some of the suggested outfits.

Airport as runway! Love it and have airport outfit ideas pinned to a Pinterest board. I like to dress-up when I travel. Looking good doesn't have to be uncomfortable.

I've worn Jean's and combat boots on a plane before. I was hoping it would make people NOT talk to me. I think it worked. I don't fly often, but when I do I generally try to look normal (instead of my usual dystopian self LOL)

You know, I prefer delta’s upgrade system which is transparent. There was a previous class action suit alleging that discretionary upgrades discriminated against women and poc which was settled.

If I earned the upgrade, I want it whether I’m wearing cut offs and flip flops or a suit. Of course I’m more likely to wear one and not the other.

Haha, I like the word cringe-worthy ! Now that I think, I do not remember ever seeing anything cringe-worthy at airports, I always notice a huge amount of jeans and sneakers. If I have to fly I dress in a comfortable way but more or less as usual: pullover, pants, topper, comfortable shoes that slip-on/slip off easily such as ballet flats and slip-ons, and if they are old and well tried, the better. I learnt this lesson many years ago after a 12-hours flight. I was wearing a pair of booties that on the arrival had become very tight!

Having just got off a long flight, with a very long stopover, the difference between CDG and JFK is quite striking. Interesting topic!

I’ve been in 1st class a couple times. The first time, we were newlyweds (a long time ago) and I was the only woman without a fur coat. The flight attendant took my 60/40 coat and hung it up in a closet.

On our recent trip to Alaska, I took nothing but gear. Nothing. Even in the Seattle and Portland airports, I felt at home in my gear. At least I wasn’t wearing my Muck boots or ear flap hat, which I saw a man wearing on the Barrow to Anchorage flight.

as this article notes...its never a good idea to wear flip flops or open toe shoes, and if possible wear long pants and long sleeves, because if you have to use the emergency slide they will protect you better.

JAileen -- I'm another who often travels with nothing but gear. If you're going backpacking, what the heck are you going to do with that extra travel outfit once you arrive at your destination? Mail it ahead to yourself? Certainly not carry it hundreds of miles!

I will say, I think airline passengers are usually dressed a bit better than bus/train passengers, at least in the US. I'm always amazed when I take Greyhound or Amtrak at how many people just wear full-on PJs. I know bus trips are slow, but still.
