Shows celebrities in big brim, casual hats at the airport.

I have to ask: Do y'all wear big brimmed hats on airplane rides? The only time I've ever done that was because I didn't want to ruin my hat packing it, and it was a pain. It was part of a very Stepford Wives High Tea outfit...

Well, if you are a celebrity, I guess the big brimmed hat + big sunglasses affords a little more anonymity. But really I think it's exactly what you said - that hats are a pain to pack. I was thrilled to find out that the red one I bought in England is packable!

This reminds me though - I need to acquire a hat box for my fancy pillbox hat. I carried it home from the UK in my big Longchamp tote (and carried my other purse separately) inside one of those clear plastic boxes, but I really need a hard sided box for it. The hat boxes they had for sale at the hat shop were all pretty enormous, and I didn't need one quite so large as that.

ETA: I'd imagine you would HAVE to take the hat off while you were sitting in the airplane seats, otherwise you'd have to sit with your head tilted forward the whole time? Or maybe this is because I'm short and my head never clears the top of airplane seats...

Forget the hats, who are some of these people. I mean , they are lovely and all. I have flown twice with a big rim hat and both times they sat on my lap the entire flights. Now I buy the roll up ones.

I have put on hats with brims in airports : just last month in Hawaii because the walkway I was on was outside and the sun was beating down. And then one in the Bahamas for the same reason. OK, it was really because of the paparazzi. : )

We'll I would say no in general, but I had to do this on a flight back from N.Y. For a hat that I bought. I did not want to damage the hat. But, I must say I received several compliments on my airport attire.

Hey if I was flying first class and some one put it away for me somewhere it wouldn't get squished, maybe? Otherwise no. For hot places I tend to buy whatever the local headgear is when I arrive there if there are beaches involved, otherwise it's a very battered baseball cap from my favorite hardware store for hiking.

I can't imagine trying to sit with the hat on. No, I'm sure no one leaves them on...?

But, perhaps I have traveled back with hats. I think I do tend to get some place and buy a hat too... and then have to bring it back.

I tried a few times to do crushable, roll-up straw, but I think I've settled on visor bonnets. Those are easy to throw in a bag.

re. storage: I had a hat box, but it was basically cardboard and age got to it. Then I did hat stands, but I have more hats than a couple can handle. Now I'm trying a basket.

I live in Mexico City and travel (fly) at least once a month for work. You don't want to know how many people I see getting on planes wearing mariachi hats, lol. I am pretty sure by the time they get it home they are probably SO OVER IT, but hey, it serves as a good memento of their trip, right?

I flew out to FL this time with my fedora on, and my knee high Frye boots, too, so I didn't have to pack either one. It felt a little over the top, but I sort of felt a little like a rockstar too, tee hee.

I did wear a set of furry earmuffs - not as fun as a wide-brimmed hat, but your cold Canadian equivalent!

The hats are wonderful and no I havn't worn one to fly...but what really grabbed my attention was the first frame with the navy polka dot jacket over a gray crew...I have a navy polka dot jacket and have been wondering what to wear with it...THX

I guess I'm old-fashioned because I still think that hats are for wearing outdoors, not indoors, and a plane or an airport is indoors. OK, if you're being "golden age of flight" on a private plane and you're out on the tarmac like Gwen Stefani's pic, then OK...for 5 minutes. Otherwise, where do you put them once you're on the plane? It's obvious that most of these gals are not traveling coach, where every single millimeter of storage is fought over.

I've flown in first class* and the flight attendant took my jacket and hung it up on a hanger. Would she have put a big hat in a safe place? I don't know. When I travel I like to take things that make getting around easy. So I take a ball cap instead of a big straw hat. I do have a Tilley hat, but it packs flat.

*The airline upgraded us because they had cancelled our flight the day before.

Just wondering how inconspicuous anyone would be in a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses worn indoors in an airport. A ratty pair of sweatpants, a stretched out T, and a pair of flipflops that have seen better days would be better camouflage in most airports that I've been in lately....

A big brimmed hat like a lot of those? Just once, returning home from Florida and I couldn't bear to crush the stripey straw hat I bought while there. I wore it up until we got to the airport, then it was in my hands or on my lap. Some of those haute baseball caps and beanies were pretty casual cute though, that I might do.

Ha, most of those "wide" brims are sissy stuff! Hat preservation is one reason, sunny climate at the destination is another. But usually I pack my hats and keep a rollable one in my bag.

I am SO not a hat person. I wear them so rarely, I can't imagine bothering to bring one on a trip. Except my baseball-style cap for running, which I shove in the suitcase.
