Airing out faux leather?

I just bought a skater skirt from Asos. It's faux leather, and it does have an unpleasant odor. I left it out on top of my bureau to air out. It's been about a week, and although the smell has improved, it's still there. Does anyone have any tricks for getting the smell out?

What does the care label say? I have a faux leather jacket that I put in the washing machine on hand wash cycle and air dried. Came out like new.

I have to wonder where all this stinky pleather is coming from. I ordered a pleather jacket a couple months ago from Nordie's, stunk to high heaven, I couldn't even stand it around the house for more than a couple days before I packed it up and shipped it back. I can't remember at the moment what brand it was, but it was a higher-end, not cheap, brand.

Makes me wonder if it is coming from China and the smell is from the air pollution there. It had kind of that odor. I don't know. But I figure if everyone just sends it back with complaints, maybe eventually somehow there will be pressure applied and in turn supply/demand will work it's magic, and ultimately the people of China can breathe better.

Shiny, I think it's simply the faux leather itself. It's basically a type of plastic, so I think it's just off-gassing. Kind of like new-car smell, just ickier. But a skirt from Nordie's should definitely not smell, since that's top of the line. I bought a faux leather skirt from H&M at the same time, and it doesn't have an odor at all. So there are certainly ways to do it that won't smell. I half-wonder if the smell in my case is because the skirt is a very thin, soft faux leather. I know that plastic that is very flexible loses more of its chemicals into food and stuff, while hard plastic is much more inert. I'm probably breathing in thousands of harmful chemicals being off-gassed by the skirt as I type...ack...ack... But that's OK, it's for fashion!

Some plastics are just more smelly than others. I always try a good airing outside with any fabric that smells. The outside air does wonders.
