Two questions here

I have a robe coat very much like this one: https://us.weekendmaxmara.com/.....-manu-navy

Its belt was not attached and I lost it while de-planing earlier this year. Inquiries about buying just a belt from the company have been met with incredulity.

What kind of belt would you suggest as a substitute? I bought a black leather skinny tie belt (somewhat whip like) but I am not entirely satisfied with it.

I’m heading back to the US after six months away and hoping to find some good winter, fleece fitted pants or leggings. Last year I got some good Zella ones at Nordstrom that were a little bit of a cross between a legging and a jogger, but those don’t seem to be available anymore. Any suggestions?

How frustrating about the belt. I think I would go with a wider leather one, maybe in black but navy would be ideal. Stunning coat and I guess you can wear without the belt too.

I can’t help with the pants but good luck on the return to the US.

I'd try a belt as wide as the belt loops. Leather. I'd go to the effort of trying to match the red at least tonally. Otherwise I'd go for a soft cognac or tan that is a tonal match to your hair.

You could have few belt options on hand, so that you can change the look to work best with your outfit.

I'll leave the leggings suggestion to the Fabbers who are gear experts!

‘Yes’ to a leather belt the width of the belt loops. Also, bonus points if you can source one with a leather covered buckle - otherwise match buckle metal to your accessory metal per the bag you carry (silver or gold).

My first instinct would be a skinny black leather tie belt - but you didn't care for the result, which is too bad. The skinny belt seems more modern than a wider one based on what I've seen from the higher end brands lately. Maybe a wide really soft belt would be interesting ?

No suggestions for fleece lined pants - haven't seen them in a few years. Did you check Athleta ? Or Lululemon?

Hmm, I haven’t seen any fitted fleece pants/leggings either — everything seems to be wider or baggy now.

I would be tempted to wear the coat out shopping and just try on different belts with it to see what works. The narrow belt sounds good in theory, but I have a faux leather trench with a very thin belt and it feels a little off to me, so I get it. I’m picky about belts!

That is a gorgeous coat -- and wow, talk ab out frustrating to lose the belt!

My advice would be to try a bunch. That's not terribly helpful I know. But it might be the best way to go. Because you won't know if you like the effect until you see it.

On another note, if you have a good seamstress/tailor, she can replicate the material in your coat and make you a fabric belt to match the one you lost.

It might be worth it to check ebay for a matching belt. People sell all sorts of odd pieces. Otherwise I would consider Kate's idea. I like the idea of a leather belt also, but think it would be nice to have an option similar to the original.

Disappointing and frustrating response from Max Mara. Hope you find a suitable replacement..
For your fleece joggers I would suggest checking out lululemon’s adapted state high rise joggers. I’ve ordered the thermal ones for myself and like the slimish fit.

I would look for a soft leather belt, in a width close to the original.

I found more of what I have in mind by searching for "soft leather sash" than "soft leather belt."

I found a couple on Etsy that I can envision with the coat (pics below). You can find them in different colors.

I wonder if you could find someone on Etsy to make you a custom belt out of a similar fabric?

As for fleece bottoms, I've been quite happy with the Athleta Altitude leggings. They are very warm. Stretchy rather than compressive. They used to make a slim jogger style in the same fabric, but I don't see them anymore!

Gorgeous coat. How unfortunate that you lost the belt. The YLF has come through with some great suggestions.

I have ordered the joggers that merwoman suggested from Lululemon. I am considering ordering the fleece lined leggings from Lululemon as well. I am not sure they would be warm enough for our winters.

I found that Max Mara (as opposed to Max Mara Weekend, where I bought my coat) sells replacement belts. I ordered a navy and crossing fingers they use the same colors as their sister brand. Blues are tricky!

I’m also going to try those Lulu thermals — the indochine blue color they have is lovely.

I've been thinking about this on and off the last few days, mostly because I have a couple of robe coats and I wonder what I would do if I lost the tie.

So...what do you think about the length of your coat? Would you be willing to sacrifice a few inches of length (maybe less depending on how deep the hem is) from the bottom of your coat in order for a sewist to make you a replacement belt? You could maybe back the belt in something else interesting if needed to minimize the impact on the length and do a slide through buckle to make the best use of the least fabric....
