Got this *upcycled* sweater this weekend, made to an 18th (?) century French pattern for a riding jacket. Pics are bad (taken in the dark ladies room, lol), but it has this peplum thingy in back. I am keeping this thing and wearing it no matter what, even if it makes me look fat! (If it does, don't tell me, haha!)

Thoughts on how to style it best / colours to go with? It has this high, cut away front that leaves a lot on show of what's underneath.

Hmm, off the top of my head I would say an easy thing to do is a bottom piece that hits at your natural waist with a shirt tucked in. But if you don't like doing that I could also see it with some sleek bottoms and a shirt that is shorter than what you currently have in the picture.

Fun piece!

ETA: this looks like a neutral brown color? So you really have quite a wide array of other colors you could pair it with. Experiment and have fun!

I agree with Nicole re styling suggestions. I think it might work with various shapes of skirt, depending on what top/belt you choose. Would look great with boots, of course. Could work with tucked skinnies too, for a slightly feminine twist on the equestrian look.

This is great.A signature piece for your wardrobe.
I like the suggestions so far and would go for the equestrian look all the way.
Regarding skirts I would prefer it with pencil skirts.

I love it too! What a cool piece. I want to put you in a poet blouse and skinnies tucked into tall boots but that might be a bit to literal and costumey (but I still love the idea)!

I think it needs a shorter top--maybe the length even with the very longest part of the blazer at the back or a few inches longer. I'd experiment with flowy blouses and knit tops too. How would it look open with a simple T shirt and scarf at the neck?

Wow, what a cool sweater! And it looks like it fits you really well, too (from what I can see in the photos).

I think you could wear it with a full or A-line skirt (knee length or midi) and rugged boots, like Doc Martens or some other tall, lace-up boots. A structured doctor's satchel could be a good handbag choice, if you have one.

I can't wait to see all the ways you style it.

Since it's neutral, I think it will go with any color. I'm seeing high waisted pencil skirts and trousers, riding boots, combat boots, ankle boots, skinnies and bf jeans, midis... basically everything.

Oh, a total treasure trove of ideas! I knew you guys would know what to do! I was a complete blank, but I loved the sweater and got it anyways.

@nicole - Gosh, you are so right! The shape isn't neutral, but the color actually is. Now that I look closely, what reads brown is actually made up of lots of different color speckles - there's oatmeal, red, burgundy, blue, green.

@Suz & Ana - duh! Boots never even occurred to me. Am I asleep? I'd love a pair of high DMs. This is so gonna be my excuse. Need to see if I own any high-waisted trousers.

@celia & rae - another duh! Pencil skirts also never occurred to me. You know, I don't think I own one anymore...

@claire - I'm going to commit this memory - flowy shirts, hems even. I need that kind of specificity. I'll have to experiment with scarves. Yet another thing that failed to cross my mind!

...Ok: high waists, pencil skirts, boots, even hems, romantic tops, equestrian twist... Would a blouse with ruffles down the front be too costumey? Not that this would stop me, LOL... but I'll try to avoid actually putting on my actual jodhpurs unless I really go riding.

I likey! I also thought it might be nice paired with high waisted bottoms. I'd let the sweater be the focal point and keep the top underneath simple and sleek.

Okay, late to the ladies' room, and first off, I don't see you looking fat in anything. I love this peplum look on you, Rachylou, and immediately thought of skinnies, too. The hem is so interesting and this type of bottom would play it up nicely. It's a great color.
