About puffer coats - YouLookFab Forum

Another winter is coming, and I have again the same problem: what to wear when it's cold. It's not like Barcelona gets that cold, ever, but I get cold anyways, so most coats in retail don't do it for me. I have yet to find a +70% wool coat (mostly are around 60%), let alone be able to afford it AND like it. So, given their current popularity, I'm considering the option of a puffer (and praying so that my old black and very loved wool coat holds on for another year).

For the record, I don't like puffers that much, but I've seen one that might fit the bill.

I tried it on and it looked ok (as good as any puffer can look on petite me), the price is right and composition states that: 100% polyamide - Lining: 100% polyamide - Filling: 90% grey duck down,10% grey duck feather -.

How does this sound to you? My doubt is that it is very thin and I'm not sure it will keep me warm enough. I don't want a mid-temp coat since I have too many of those.

Another option is to layer under a 60% wool coat and feel just fine, Irene. I bet I feel as cold or colder than you do - and Seattle is colder than Barcelona. I manage pretty well. And I have puffers.

I like the MNG puffer. It's very casual though, but could work well for your needs. The down quality sounds fine for Barcelona.

I feel a bit uncomfortable with layers, I rather wear a thick sweater than three thinner layers, which is why I guess I am always cold.

Also, I might be moving to northern Europe by the start of the new year, so I have to buy with that in mind, too. I do own a rather ugly but efficient, short skiing puffer if I don't find anything else that's good enough though.

PS: It's just that I like my 70% wool coat so much! Hard for me to replace.

Irene, have you checked out Lands' End? Their coats are wool/nylon/cashmere that feels heavenly and is super warm. Very reasonable prices, unconditional guarantee. They also show temperature ratings for their coats and jackets so you can get an idea of their performance. I have collected several of their outerwear pieces over the last five years and have been very happy with all of them.

Even Chanel have done their take on the puffer jacket and everyone is wearing a version of this classic in London. Your link took me to the Mango home page so I didn't get to take a look at the one you like but if it is warmth factor you are looking for I'd look for something better quality recycled and then you can have the wow factor too within your budget.

Do they have Uniqlo in Spain? If I remember rightly they are the place to go for those super light but fairly inexpensive packable down jackets, similar to what you've shown here but probably less money. I bought a similar ultra light down jacket that squashes down into a little bag and it is amazingly warm, despite being thin. The only problem with the one I have is that it isn't very long -- it would be great to have a knee length version.

The Mango one is ok but it seems to me like the sleeves are a bit short on the model, which would drive me nuts. I like my sleeves a little too long so that I can pull them right down over my wrist.

I like this coat a lot (I would). I got a longer coat like this two winters ago. To be honest, it was really sweater weight. On the other hand, except for the very very coldest depth of winter - I did all right commuting to work. A silk thermal would help.

Irene, get yourself to Uniqlo for the best thermals on the planet. You won't even feel you are wearing them.

If you're moving to Northern Europe this might not feel warm enough if you run cold. But Uniglo thermals will buy you some looking time until you find just the right coat for your new climate! I would recommend that.

I also wanted to say that although I'm from a place that gets very cold sometimes (Colorado) and I live in Northern England, I spent the winter in Valencia a few years ago and froze my butt off, so I feel your pain!
