About my appearance

I don't want to sound obnoxious or something but this website has permit me to know more about myself. You guys are really good at giving constructive criticisms and I really want to know something about my appearance.

I noticed that people tend to be uncomfortable with me or look at me weird or have a shock on their face when they first see/meet me. Well most of them, not all. I dunno what is up with that. When I went to China, people were looking at me weird (I had medium/long hair before) and I ask my Hong Kong friend what I look like to them and he said I look mix.

I've post some pictures up on "What I wore today" and "your body type". So I want to know what how you guys can describe my appearance based on your opinion. What ethnicity you think I am?

P.S: after5 said I have an interesting look and I am confused lol...

Hm, I had no such reaction when I saw you. I'm going to be perfectly honest and say that I am very poor at telling ethnicity, and I don't like to make assumptions anyway, probably because people make assumptions about ME all the time, and when I try to correct them, they actually try to disagree with me...

Anyway, you are very slim. I'm not sure why that would be an issue in China, where I think people are slimmer in general, if I'm not mistaken. But by our big fat American standards, you're very small. When I was thin (though not as thin as you), people would always comment on it. Some nice folks even accused me of having an eating disorder, though I don't think I was ever THAT skinny--didn't have bones poking out or a sunken look to my face or anything like that. But it was always the first thing people seemed to notice about me.

I wonder if perhaps you're being self conscious for no reason? I don't doubt what you're saying but...it could just be because someone notices something about how you dress, or about your hair. It might not be bad or negative. I know if there's something I like about a stranger, I sometimes linger a little longer than I would normally. So don't jump to the conclusion that it's because you're weird in some way. Perhaps they're looking at you with envy. I know I did when I saw your picture!

I agree with Maya. When I saw your pictures I thought you look like a model. You look very good in your style choices and you are very photogenic, and your hairstyle is perfect. I think people may stare at you because you are beautiful. You also seem like you have a very nice and friendly personality. Maybe people are a little afraid of you until they find out that you are very nice + very pretty.
I know from experience that if you are shy it can come across as being non friendly sometimes. I am shy too.
As for you looking like a mix, don't take that too seriously.

When my Taiwanese-American girlfriend traveled to China, she had a similar reception. She told me she felt like she stuck out like a blue eyed, blonde hair caucasian amid all the chinese. This has long fascinated me; I think it is really hard if one is caucasian like I am to guess the ethnic differences of someone who is asian. So I won't even begin to try.

Otherwise, I totally agree with San! You are quite stunning and you look like a model. I missed the comment, but I have to imagine "interesting" was meant to be a compliment.

I think you look great and quite normal. In the multicultural city I spent most of my life in there were many people from Singapore, China, Malaysia and Vietnam and I'd guess your cultural background would be from one of those places. You'd fit in no problem.

I don't know what looking "mix" means - can you tell us?

I think both Maya and San have good points - there are other, positive reasons why people might look at you

Hmm, I don't know what would be up with that either based on the pictures you've posted here. You have a beautiful slim figure and it looks like you can carry off a lot of trends beautifully - I don't think I commented, but I LOVED your blue tunic and leggings, and your haircut is so cute and edgy. But I really don't see anything about you that would be "shocking!"

Personally, if I was glancing at you a little longer than normal, I'd probably be admiring how you carried off your outfit and trying to evaluate whether I could possibly translate the look to my heavier, curvier figure.

I don't think you look weird at all. Perhaps they are admiring the lovely you. I live in Seattle and nobody here ever guesses my ethnic background correctly. (I haven't posted a picture of my face so you won't find me on the forum.) I grew up in Hawaii, where everyone loves to guess each others ethnic background so I will make a guess on your ethnicity. My guess is that you are either Chinese or Korean. You don't look mixed to me. I am mixed - 1/2 Chinese and 1/2 Austrian and I looked mixed. I think you look lovely, young and healthy. Was I close?

I think you are beautiful! You know, I have noticed that certain cultures are more "okay" with staring than others. In North America, staring is considered rude - so if you stare at someone, it's often assumed you are doing so for a negative reason. I've noticed in most Asian cultures, staring isn't considered rude, and is quite common. And people are more likely to stare at someone because they are attractive, inmy experience. So I'd guess people were staring at you because 1) you are so pretty and 2) they were trying to figure out what ethnicity you are.

I would not begin to guess ethnicity- but I have to say, whatever ethnicity you are, you are a beautiful girl. And the others are right, being beautiful means people are not going to look at you the same as "average". My hope for you is that you just interpret their little "shock" at seeing you as a compliment, smile at them to give them a little reassurance, and say something so they can move past the outer appearance and get to know the real you.

anne: Mix? My hong kong friend said I don't look like a Hong Kong person. He said I look like I come from another part of China and he is right, I am not a HK person.

I don't know what HK Chinese look like. I think my dad told me that he is Cantonese. Having said this, when I first started my career, I met people that I initially set appointments with over the phone. So all they had to judge me on was my Chinese last name. I had several comments from clients who said "Your Chinese? You don't look Chinese." (They weren't PC then.) I am a "split down the middle" mix. In Seattle, people think I am either hispanic or Italian.

I really don't know how a Hong Kong person look like in general but most of the time, I think we recognize them by the way they dress and talk. My Hong Kong friend looks like one for some odd reasons, I think it's because of his square face and the way he act.

When I compare my cousins from China with me, the way we dress are totally different. My looks tend to be different than them, I think because my haircut is more Western than Asian.

I don't have much to add--I would have guessed you were Chinese, which you are, and if by mixed you mean hapa you definitely don't look hapa (not that there's anything wrong with being hapa! You just don't look hapa). You're a very beautiful girl and I love your haircut.
