The more I shop in Australia, the more I think service here *REALLY* stinks. Seriously, seriously stinks.
I just purchased a scarf as a gift from a fairly known retail chain here in Australia, Forever New. I usually like their merchandise, it's fashion-forward and not too expensive (not cheap, mind you!)
Upon removing the scarf from the bag to take another look at it over lunch, I noticed some threads had already started to pull - and I had barely touched it! I decided to return it.
At this stage I had the full intention of purchasing another gift from there. I had seen quite a few other things I liked.
I went to the counter and was met by the girl who served me the first time. I told her my problem. She glanced at the pulled threads and said "Oh, that's fine. We have some new ones out the back so I'll just go grab you one" (without asking me if that's what I wanted).
Me: "Actually, I think I might return it instead."
Here: "Oh...fine".
Me (explaining): "It's just I've bought it as a gift and I'm afraid it might happen again with another one".
Her (off-handedly without looking at me): "Well, we've had this style in for 4 years and never had a problem. And of course, as it's cotton you always need to be a bit careful." (Me thinking...Umm...what? And also, I've barely touched it!)
Me: "Oh...oh well. Can I get a refund?"
Her: "Sure. Fine."
She did not make eye contact with me for the rest of the transaction. She became "all business" and shoved the return receipt across to me to sign. She snappily informed me "There you go, it should be back on your card now" before rudely turning away to serve someone else.
I said "Thanks. Sorry about that!"
Her: "That's fine."
As I walked away I thought, why on earth am I apologising? She was rude to me!
I resolved on the spot never to shop there again.
I get this kind of experience all. the. time.
