A question from my 78-yr old mom!

My mom is a chic 78-yr old rectangle with secondary apple tendencies (that's my interpretation of her saying, "tell them I have a sack butt and rolls around the middle"). She's looking for straight leg black pants that won't wrinkle.

Any suggestions for pants for older fashionistas?

I don't have any recommendations but your mother sounds so cute :)Big hugs to her.
Now that I think of it my MIL has the same body type and she bought some fabulous pants at Laura(it is a Canadian store).But , in my opinion, you do have to try them until you find the perfect fit.
Did she try any of the Banana Republic ones?

My mom is not the same shape (tall, more pear) but she really liked the Gap trousers I bought her as a gift in her 60's.

What about these from Land's End? I think they've upped their game a little on style, and I find their quality pretty equivalent to Gap and Banana Republic anymore. Their styles and fit are a smidge more conservative than those youth brands, so I feel like they fit a very fashionable but slightly older body very well. However, pockets may be an issue.

These ponte pants from Ann Taylor are also very nice (I have last year's version).

Love your mom!! She and my mom should get together. My mom will tell her all about her skin tags and will complain about the fact that she can't wear booties after all this year (since she broke her ankle).

I have no great suggestions except to say that my mom does like some Land's End stuff and she also likes shopping at the place Celia mentioned, Laura. Unfortunately, it's Canadian. But you could always come up for a visit!

Sarah, tell your mom that she's not alone with "sack butt" and midriff rolls. I've got both and find that a black twill or denim pant in a jean cut works best for the first problem. Getting the right rise helps with the muffin top. I've also had pretty good luck in the past with Express Editor pants, except that they have a rather low rise. Mine are polyester (no wrinkles and machine washable). Be sure to go with her if you go because the Express SA's tend to ignore us older gals.
