Angie - TX is a big state, so I bet it varies a lot. They don't much in Austin. I do though, because I rode Western as a kid (drill team!) and I love cowboy boots, so I wear them everywhere.

I'd say in Dallas a bit more often but not really so much in Austin or downtown San Antonio. I mean you're going to see some but it's not like the "norm." It's so darned hot here most of the year, cowboy boots are not great in the heat unless you really need the foot protection out on the ranch. I live in the hill country and I do see cowboy boots (and hats) more often out here because people are "working their land" or walking on it a lot and want rattlesnake and rock protection for their feet.

All that said, they certainly are not out of place and there are some great stores to buy boots.

We have no plans to come to TX at the moment. But we are watching "Friday Night Lights" (on the last season and it's BRILLIANT), and so many people on the show - all ages - wear cowboy boots. Teachers too - with everything. Granted, Dillon is a small town. Nothing urban. I was wondering how accurate the dress code was.

I'd say more people wear typical cowboy jeans (like Wranglers) and crisp western-cut button-downs than they do boots. It's a certain more rustic demo I think, and like Texstyle said, it's more about functionality. In the cities if people are wearing boots they're dancin' shoes.

Friday Night Lights is based upon the real Odessa Permian High School football team. Odessa is a somewhat small town in west Texas. So I would assume it is more accurate than not (although the media does love to play up the Texas cariatures).

My high school used to make it into the state football playoffs each year. Of course our first playoff game was always Odessa Permain Mojo. That was always the end of the line for us!

They are very pervalent in Feb when the rodeos are going on. I see a lot of young girls in them with sundresses even in this heat. They are not everyday footwear though.

That's such a great show!

I very rarely see them in Austin. They seem to be more common in Ft. Worth.

When out-of-towners come to our big music festivals, though, they all seem to go buy cowboy boots. Sometimes the tourists look more Texan than the Austin locals!

We are in Central Texas, a college town, not an urban area, and you see cowboy boots everywhere, all year. Lots of girls with sundresses and boots. Come rodeo time (February), it is boot mania! There is certainly a lot of fashion involved, but around here it is just as likely to be a pair of mudcrusted working boots. Worn by someone who drives a Ford pickup, wears a cowboy hat and can do a mean two step!

Anne and Ali, I did NOT expect to like FNLs - I am not a sporty gal at all. But my word, what a brilliant show. Such chemistry between the actors, and GREAT actors. This TV show is right up there with BSG, the Wire and Breaking Bad. Five stars.

I don't venture much out of Austin but I see them sometimes in early summer paired with otherwise boho sundresses and such. I don't think I've seen a guy in boots here in a long long time.

I need to watch FNL. I'm not big into sports either but for some reason I have a soft spot for football movies so I bet I would love it =)

I used to live in a smallish town in central Texas where boots were the norm year round. I did my training in temple, tx where there were lots of rural communities nearby. Now in houston, like others mentioned they come out to play in february for rodeo time but rarely in the heat of the summer time.

Chiming in a bit late here, but where I live (Houston), I don't see them too much at all. Around rodeo time (February), I see them more, but then they quickly disappear after that. In the more rural areas, I see them more often because many of the ranchers need them for work. In that case, they are not a fashion statement.
