A new dress - feeling cheated (ridiculous pics now!)

I'd ordered a dress online before I went to Germany. On the model, it doesn't look bad:

The dress was supposed to "flatter feminine curves". OK, right. I have a lot of curves. Now, the less pleasant part.

I'd been waiting 30 days before I got the dress. It looks nice on a hanger and that's all - it's much shorter than I supposed (based on the picture). It's not too short, but ends well above my knees. This is the least disturbing thing, though. It fits my hips, but is way too roomy around my waist. How is it supposed to flatter my curves, then? The worst is the top part: the dress is snug around my bust line, but falls off my shoulders! Of course, the amount of fabric in the back is ridiculous. I could hide a fridge there.

Conclusion: are their dresses sewn for women, or for American football players?

I decided to keep the dress. I like the design, the colour, and the fabric, but I need to have it altered.

I guess I can post a picture to show you how disastrous I look in this pitiful excuse for a fitting dress, but this is not the best time (of the month ;)). I'm taking a photo in few days, because I'm not going to spare you!

LOL - Itari, sorry to laugh but I love your sense of humor. I would be pretty steamed if a dress I ordered fit the way you're describing this one. As I was reading it, I thought, perhaps it can be altered. Would love to see before and after posts.

Oh! how frustrating to be eagerly anticipating something and then to be so cruelly let down, especially after such a long wait. Chin up, it's a lovely dress and I'm sure you will rock it after the alterations. Keep us posted.

Ugh, I know how you feel - I'm not very curvy, but had a dress do exactly the same thing to me: fitted on hips and bust, excess fabric around the waist and neckline. Truly bizarre, I can't image what shape you'd have to be to make it work.

I actually asked the salesgirl if I was wearing it wrong - maybe it was meant to be off-the-shoulder, or I had the lower half hiked up too high. Turned out I was was wearing it right, and that dress was just weird.

But after one experience where I had a skirt around my chest like a dress and was wondering why the 'halter' bits were so long (it was actually a very revealing backless dress), I try not to overestimate my skill at putting clothes on correctly I always check now if something just seems too weird to believe...

Anyway, hopefully you can get yours altered into something presentable. Fingers crossed that it's not too bad!

sorry to hear that!
The dress seems really nice on the model, but when we have curves it's difficult to find a dress that fits perfectly.. it happens the same to me!
Maybe a good taylor can solve that!

Ok, you're right, I don't care for the style of it. I'm sure they pinned it all over the place to get that catalog picture. It's not you, it's the dress! There are parts of it I like, but it doesn't hang right overall.

Yeah, that "pin it to fit" for the photo tactic is totally evil. I almost never buy stuff online unless the dimensions are listed for that reason.

On the bright side, Magda, your legs look great in the dress!

The fabric looks much stiffer than it did in the picture, which means that it doesn't seem to drape very well. I bet the dress isn't flattering on any real person without massive pinning and tricky photography. I'm sorry that happened though - it's so disappointing when something you've been looking forward to doesn't work out.

A) You look amazing in a dress. When you find the right one, it will be killer.
B) You're very funny.

I seriously doubt that there is a person alive that could fit that dress properly. I suspect a total remake would be necessary to make it work. In that case you may be better off to look for a pattern and get a dress made to fit you perfectly from scratch. I am especially doubtful that even an experienced tailor could make the shoulders fit you well and what is all that excess fabric in the back?
Glad you have such a wonderful sense of humour....you must have been SO dissappointed after waiting one month for it to arrive!

Magda, usually you are too hard on yourself but in this case you are right. I think this dress is not a good fit for you. Usually it is difficult to find a fitted dress which fits perfectly everywhere but in your case it looks like it does not fit well anywhere.
If you can return it I would advice to do so - there are too many alterations to do. There are dresses out there which will fit you better. I have some curves too and found a black fitted dress which needed only slight alterations in waist and bust and fits me perfectly. I never thought it is possible before but it happened. Your perfect dress is waiting for you - just keep looking
P.S. That's why I never buy clothes online...

You have the perfect body for dresses, so it's safe to say if a dress doesn't fit you, something must be terribly wrong with it. It doesn't seem worth it to me. I'd return it if you can. There are so many other dresses in the world that will fit you much better.

I like the belted version the best but as Maya said above, you have a lovely figure and if the dress doesn't work, than it's from poor craftsmanship. Not an issue with your body in any way. On to more flattering dresses!

Magda, I second what everyone above said. Try to return this one. I'm positive there are perfect dresses out there for your body - you'd look terrific in dresses. You have great legs, too.

That dress looks about three sizes too big, seriously! It looks like me trying on my mother's clothes. Would you want to try it in a smaller size? Is there any part of it that would be too small in a smaller size? Do you really think you can alter it into shape? In any case your posts were entertaining

The dress is wrong in so many ways, send it back and forget about it. Consider it a lesson learned, there are going to be many better dresses in your future.
