A Huge Favor - Can You Suggest Glasses For Me?

I hope this is not too off topic. I think I hate my glasses. I can not wear contacts, so I need to find a pair I really like.

I am thinking about getting rimless glasses. This is purely a vanity issue. I used to consider my eyes my best feature, but no one ever notices them any more. (Oh, poor me.)

And my last pair, which I felt were too heavy for me. They are now reading glasses (which is why my eyes look huge and magnified!)

I don't really know anything about glasses since I don't wear glasses myself. But from a purely aesthetic point of view, I like your old pair of glasses better. Could you maybe get a new pair in a similar shape, an interesting but elegant color (plum, burgundy, mustard) that complements your complexion but in a lighter material?

Unless metal frames have some sort of interesting detailing, I do not prefer them (and even then, it seems to take a special person to pull them off). I think rimless glasses would look really good on you. I also think a caramel color would look pretty. The bottom pair aren't heavy because of the thickness, but because of the color. A lighter color would probably do wonders if you decide not to go rimless.

Earlier in the summer when I was looking for new glasses, I posted picks in many different pairs and got help that way. Another thing I did which helped was to take photos of myself in all of them. The camera is much more honest than my own eye, it seems! Good luck. Talk soon!

Tarzy - sales people in eye glass places should be trained to help identify what style frames will work best with your face. I suggest going to a few places and see which ones seems to have the best service. Take pics of your favorites -- Susan is right that it helps see how you look and we are happy to give advice as well.

Now that I have a camera again I'll try to go to some frame stores. Unfortunately all my shopping pals have either moved away or are super busy with their lives right now, which is why I'm turning to you guys for help! I'll try to drag the hubs out to some stores this weekend if I can and get some pics for you guys.

I see so many women in cool looking black frames, but I'm always afraid black is too severe on me. I like tortoiseshell - I think it's a bit softer for me. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable in red or purple or anything really fashion forward. I guess I'm looking for a "modern classic" look? I don't want to look like I'm trying to hard to be a hipster, but I don't want to look boring either.

However, I have to ask: is your first pair (current) by Guess? I think I may have the same one
I've had it for years. I liked it at first, but now it's bugging me how the top part is hitting me in the wrong place. Heh. I'm due for new lenses, and I'm considering looking for new frames as well.

I like the shape of your reading glasses. I think something in that shape with maybe a lighter frame would look good. You mentioned tortoiseshell and I think that would be a good style to try. I'm looking forward to seeing what you choose!

Tarzy-I took my own pics because I was embarrassed to ask anyone else to do it. I thought it seemed vain. Now I know it is just smart!

Oh no, Susan - I hope no one thinks I'm vain! I would not afflict you all with a close-up of my mug if I didn't really need the help, LOL.

I'm going to try some frames today and get my husband to take pics. I'm going to look at some "Tina Fey" glasses and also some rimless.

Of course, no one thinks you're vain! I meant I didn't tell anyone in my family that I took pics of myself and posted them to YLF to get help with my glasses choice. I was afraid they would think I was vain! Gosh, I hope no one else misunderstood me. I love the photos in this site. They make all the difference!

Okay - I took some pics of possible specs. I have to let you know that I have a very difficult time looking at pictures of myself. All I see are my acne scars (I had very bad cystic acne for years) and my crooked mouth, so posting these pictures is very hard for me. But I would really love to know which frames look best. I keep changing my mind, but I do have a few favorites!

Tarzy, as far as I'm concerned the first pair wins hands down. I really like the half-frame look (I don't know what it's called) on you. The other pair I liked was the soft brown rounded ones. All the tortoiseshell rectangular frames looked decent as well (except I didn't care for the light tortoise). I just think the first pair is the most interesting and unique and I also really see your eyes in them.

P.S. I sincerely do not see any of these flaws you're mentioning. Are you delusional? :p

I like the soft brown modern rounded ones best, closely followed by the modern angle ones. And I also agree with the others that you are being too hard on yourself - you are beautiful!

Disclaimer - I am no expert, and could use a new pair myself. I like the 2d and 3rd rimless pairs (with lower bridge) and the Prada ones. I like the way you look in rectangular glasses, but I wouldn't go with brown. Just wondering if you tried anything purplish or plum - it might help bringing out the color of your eyes since it's a complementary color. And I agree with others - you look absolutely terrific, and so much younger than your age. Isn't it strange how we often have a distorted image of ourselves?

Another vote for soft brown rounded. I also liked rimless #1. My assesment was based more on shape rather than colour. I think what appealed to me, personally, about those the two I picked was that they covered less of your face

Okay, I'm going to have to go against the tide here. I have four pairs of glasses myself, and I am big on experimenting with different colors and shapes -- so take my advice with a big grain of salt because my adventurousness may not be yours.

But I thought the soft brown modern rounded pair suited your face the least. There was something about the thickness of the frame and the shape that looked almost too-granny-ish, and well, not very modern, for me. Sorry!

That said, I think you look KILLER in the rectangle shape - that is a very modern shape, and it makes the glasses look like a chic accessory on you instead of something you "have to wear" (which is what the modern rounded feel like to me).

My favorites of the rectangles are the first modern angle ones (I think you need a little bit of definition color with a rimless style, and that one has a nice one -- you look very youthful, chic and confident in those!) and the lightest tortoise (love the shape, although I'm not 100% sold on the color, but I like it better than the other options).

I would recommend the next time you go to keep looking at rectangular or elongated unusual-shaped ones like the first pair, and with some kind of definition (color, wire, etc) on the top frame. I second Marianne's suggestion of maybe something with a plum instead of brown or black; I know you don't want to feel like a hipster, but oftentimes the color can be very subtle to still work.

By the way, you look really terrific! I don't see any of those famous "flaws" at all!

Hi Tarzy - My one quick comment as I'm about to make breakfast for the boys is to make sure the line of the frame (the top of it) doesn't cut too close to your eye - maybe I'm not putting that very well. When looking at the photos, some of the frames (some rectangular ones in particular) are cutting pretty low on your eye, partly blocking your eye. I would try for glasses where the frame is slightly higher. Does that make sense? I prefer the rectangle shape too - there are some that are great on you!

I am torn between the look of the rectangular ones and the rimless ones. Personally, I'm worried that the first ones are too "fashion forward" for me, and perhaps a bit wide for my face. I like the color of the soft brown rounded ones, but I do worry about any "granny effect."

I found this picture of Tina Fey and her glasses are like the Clark Kent ones, but more rounded. I need to find something like this to try. I don't know if they will be too long for my face.

The Clark Kent glasses look too wide around your eye to me. I don't know. I know the rectangle Tina Fey glasses are a classic, but the first ones just seem more special. If I had to wear glasses every day of my life, I would want them to be a bit more interesting to look at. And as I said before, your eyes just pop in them, and I know that's what you wanted.

Having said all that, I see what you mean about them being a little wide. I think Angie has a similar pair, and she's fairly dainty so maybe hers are a bit narrower. Or maybe you can find a pair that's more rectangular and less flared. I still think they look good though and I'm not bothered by the width.

If you can't find that or if you really don't feel comfortable in them, I vote for the first pair of rectangular tortoise glasses. They seem to frame your eyes the best. A lot of the ones you tried seem to do what Laura mentioned--cut your eyes off at an odd place. Are all the rimless pairs round? It's kind of hard to tell. I think I might like them more if they were rectangular, like Sarah P's glasses:

Tarzy -- I like the modern angle ones the best by far. I don't think they are too fashion-forward. They have a clean line and compliment your face and coloring. My second choice would probably be the rectangle shape.

I personally think that you should look at colors other than tortoiseshell. With your dark hair and dark eyebrows, the tortoiseshell looks heavy to me. I agree with Marianne that a plum or deep purple might look really good on you. Again a color frame that is a more traditional shape might not feel so fashion-forward to you.

Tarzy, I have never worn glasses, so take this with a big chunk o' salt, but I exponentially prefer the first pair (Modern Angle). I think they look young and stylish on you, not "hipster" or too fashion-forward. And I'll add another vote for giving a subtle purple or plum colour a try. I see none of the flaws you were mentioning, by the way--just a beautiful, approachable, glowy young woman.

Tarzy, I prefer the first pair of glasses as well. I also second (or third) the suggestion of trying a subtle color. Can't wait to see what you decide.
