Leave it to Angie to find the silver lining! No working on her 50th Birthday!
Since I am lucky to still have part time employment, I am looking to support retail in whatever small way I can manage. I recently made a few sale purchases from Nordstrom..... cosmetics (MAC lip prime, Deborah Lippmann nail polish, Laura Mercier tight-liner and my favorite perfume) and exercise bras. They are having online sales, changing categories every couple days (cosmetics, jewelry, sandals and shirts, etc.). I like MAC lip prime, especially when I am wearing a brighter lip color for video conferencing and polishing my nails reminds me to keep my hands away from my face and out of my mouth..... I am sticking with old faves which I suppose means I am sticking with my version of classics. Perhaps these purchases are frivolous, but for me they are items I use regularly, generate some joy and contribute to a sense of routine amid many unknowns. I decided that some conservative spending is helpful to keep the few people who can work, gainfully employed, and maybe it will help preserve some of the businesses as well.
Our local mall employed 5000 people and it remains closed. Many of the retail businesses continued to pay their employees for a full month, but can no longer afford to do so.....as of this week, most officially laid people off and they are applying for unemployment. Our local hospitals have become the biggest employers but they are losing millions, people are uninsured, and their clinics and surgery centers are closed. They are going deep into debt.
