A good polish! - YouLookFab Forum

I've had a strong draw lately to shoes/accessories in non-standard colors and they were starting to look terrible. So much so that I recently found myself considering the purchase of an identical pair of one of these shoes from Poshmark because my existing pair was looking so bad (even though there is plenty of life left in the shoes). Fortunately, I realized I was being ridiculous. I put in the effort to search out the shoe polish colors I needed:

Burgundy polish for my Ecco Soft high top sneakers

Antique silver polish for my Ecco Soft 7 sneakers

Navy polish for my Miz Mooz Lewis boots in Ocean

And finally, I bought a teal Coach purse at a yard sale in August but it was badly in need of a good polish and I couldn't find any teal polish. But I bought some turquoise polish and then mixed that together with the navy and was fortunate to get a good result.

I'm so glad I did this! Not everything looks perfect, but it is all much improved.

Have you put in any special effort lately to maintain the wardrobe items you already own?

I really don't have any items to maintain at this time. I've been rebuilding my wardrobe after losing nearly all possessions, furniture, and clothing to a house disaster. But your post is a good reminder for the future!

Absolutely! I bought red polish to revive a well-loved pair of combat boots, and bronze polish to touch up my favorite bronze booties. Both of these pairs are over ten years old and still going strong. I resoled the red ones a couple of years ago.

Roberta, I used to have the Cobb Hill Bethany boots in teal but I threw them out after badly wearing out the soles. I didn't think they would be able to be resoled so I didn't even investigate it. I'm glad you were able to get yours resoled but bummed I didn't try!

Polishing shoes and reconditioning leather items always reignites my love of my footwear and accessories. There’s nothing like the glow of a good conditioning and buff job!

DH is the ‘iron man’, but this summer I’ve stolen the job from him after recently getting into audio books through my Libby app! As a result there’s very little downtime for cottons and linens after laundry day!

Polishing shoes and cleaning bags is so satisfying, isn't it? I polish leather shoes and boots at the end of the season before putting them away. I used to do it more often when I walked through New England slush and salt, now I do it only as necessary during the season.

I'm a big sneaker person and we have very red clay instead of dirt in my area, which means my sneakers get dirty fast. One of these days I need to do a post about how good my favorite sneaker cleaner is. This stuff (Grandma's Secret Sneaker Cleaner) keeps my sneakers shiny and looking like new.

Jenny H, you did a fantastic job! I hope you get a lot of wears and use out of your newly polished items. Your post is a great reminder to polish and waterproof my boots before I actually need to wear them. I always seem to think about it after going through puddles or wet snow.

Lisa, I would love to see a post about your sneaker cleaner. I recently mowed my lawn and got grass stains all over my sneakers because I forgot to change my shoes beforehand. I would love to get my sneakers looking clean again.
