I know this is intended as humor.
Academia is the true revenge of the nerds! It is a refuge (with a few exceptions) from being required to think about how I look. If I'm buying groceries, I want to think about the food, not others' thoughts on my appearance. If I'm discussing Rousseau or Foucault, I want to think about that, not about how I look. For many of us, thinking about how we look takes energy that could be used elsewhere. I've chosen recently to think about it, but really appreciate a career where I'm not required to do so, as opposed to general life, where not looking put together leaves you wide open for snark and insults. I agree that people shouldn't be forbidden from thinking about how they look--but no one should be required to either.
