A dress and my YLF years

I wore my mum's dress today and Kelly mentioned she hadn't seen me wear it in a while... I went and looked it up and I really had not posted a look with it for some time. Looking through the pictures I realised that this dress is one of the few pieces dating back to my time before YLF. And the only one of those pieces I've worn regularly (accessories and jewelry excluded). I looked and found one outfit for every year, 2010-2014 in chronological order.

Do you also have an item that has continued to go strong during your YLF time?

I hadn't realized how similar your hair is to mine! When it's long and wavy not curly, is that just from brushing it or do you straighten it with a curling iron? I've never ever straightened my hair with heat, but after a few days of not washing it, the oil makes it smooth and wavy.

No, I don't even own an curling iron. I would say in all of these pictures my hair was just washed and air-dried. I do comb with a wide toothed comb sometimes and they look different after a few days of not washing, but that's it. The rest is cut and probably weather.

I adore that dress. It is so Astrid to me and has spanned the years well. Perhaps the boho vibe keeps it more current? I don't really know but it is charming and boho and so you! I hope you never tire of it.

I don't know if I have such a strong item in my closet. I wear jeans and boots every year but I can't think of a dress/top/jacket that I have worn for more than a couple of years. High turnover in my closet, I'm afraid. I can think of a few handknits that date pre-ylf that I still wear on occasion but nothing as fab as your dress.

Kelly, the boho is really kind of timeless, considering the dress is almost 30 years old. I don't think I will tire of it, even though I might wear it less often from time to time. And it will always be the best summer dress for being comfortably at home on hot days. I've had a lot of turnover otherwise too, but maybe that's also partly because my style has still been changing and I got a lot of cheap fixes or sale items that weren't the best choice after all.

This dress is awesome! It looks great on you and who could tell there are so many ways to style it.

My list of items includes:
Red dress.
Purple dress.
Leather jacket.
Black waterfall cardigan.
White linen skirt.

Btw, don't think of your outfits as unexciting. To someone they may be the first time they see them. All outfits are worth posting

Ornella, I can see your pieces before my inner eye, so you must have been wearing them a lot! And thanks, but a lot of my recent outfits were repetitions in themselves. I've been wearing the same few pieces all the time, with very little variation. It's been jeans, boots, pullover/cardigan and scarf all the time.

How fun is that?! I know there are many items in my closet, but the first that came to mind was my TR Disco Billy straight leg jeans. I'd have to think on the dresses, as I used to just buy 'cute' dresses or ones that looked good on me. Which is so not my true style, so the dresses may be the category most overhauled since coming here in 2010.

What fun seeing all those pics!

I haven't been active on YLF for very long, but as a reader before that, I definitely underwent a style shift in the last 2-3 years. I also moved in 2010 to a dramatically different climate. My list is therefore quite small:

a navy wool winter coat
a blue-green rain coat
a wool blazer (hacking jacket style)
a grey pleated skirt
a navy pleated skirt
a teal long sleeve tee
a navy long sleeve tee
a navy cotton cardigan

...and that's all I'm coming up with! There might be a few more pieces, but none are coming to mind. Wow. That means most of my closet (in the 150-200 piece range) has been acquired since my move, in the last 3-4 years. What a dramatic overhaul! I'll have to think on this further, but no wonder I got in the habit of bringing home everything I loved from the thrift store. When I started my shift, I wore almost entirely knit tops instead of woven ones, for instance. It's a good reminder that now I'm firmly in the closet tweaking/maintenance stage rather than building from the ground up.

Love that dress on you! I can't think of a good through the ages item right now, but I do notice when I wear something that I remember posting about a year or more ago - that is about the only way I can remember how long I have had some things!

Astrid, what fun seeing how your style has evolved over the years, and how this dress has so successfully made the journey with you! I have a number of well-loved pre-YLF items, but I can't think of a stand-out that has been as strong a player for me as your dress has been for you.

Mo, I remember some of your posts about purging dresses. It's so true that pieces that look good on you or nice in general don't have to FEEL like you.

E, that's a lot! I also think my wardrobe won't need as much overhaul from now on as it did in the first two years. And I'm more sure that what I buy now will still be liked in a year or two.

Shevia, I'm sure I have some pieces that aren't as recognisable as the dress that I had for just as long. I'd probably see them looking through the pictures, but I might not remember them now.

This dress is wonderful on you. And it's lasted incredibly well. When something works with your style, it just works, I guess.

I have just a couple of items that pre-date YLF. Because I joined after body changes I'd had to get rid of my entire wardrobe, pretty much. Even shoes! But I do have one skirt that I got altered so it would still fit (my black gored skirt) and one black jersey dress that was too tight before YLF but fit once I had lost the weight and has been a workhorse, although I haven't worn it much this year.

Thanks Suz! I think the empire cut of the dress works very well with weight fluctuations, I've worn it during weight changes of 20lbs after all. I still have some other pieces pre-dating YLF that I don't fit into at the moment. One summer pencil skirt I made myself, together with my Oma, comes instantly to mind.
