A denim skirt for moi?? - YouLookFab Forum

Like many Fabbers, I've had a denim skirt on my tentative shopping list since Angie first posted about them. Nothing's turned up for me and I was preparing to make do without. I'm also rather appalled at how much I've bought this spring.

Then this showed up on Modcloth today.

It checks SO many boxes. A-line fit, fitted waist, approximately knee length, pockets, true denim styling, and on-trend distressing. I'd wear it with my graphic tees (Buzz and Nouveau Leia, plus others) obviously. But also with shirt-collar and other blouses to take the "dressed up" edge off. With sneakers, or basic sandals like the rose gold ones (not limited to those).

Drawbacks? It's tencel, not cotton. Says handwash (!). And it's described as chambray.

So... opinions, please! Does this work with my style? Why (ON EARTH) is it handwash? I know what tencel is, and I've felt it, but I don't know how it holds up or launders. I do NOT want to have to handwash a skirt. What's the risk, that it will shrink? Is it a lightweight, drapey fiber? An a-line skirt really shouldn't be that stiff, but something that looks like denim but feels and drapes like crepe is just weird.

Shipping will be free because this is over $50, but returns are not free. (Believe it or not, I'm cheap on things like that.)

It looks very pretty. Do you have time for handwashing items? I do gentle and lay flat. It looks denim but it could wrinkle more easily. It all depends on if you Want the look or not and the cost of sending it back for a try on.

I think it has high potential for you, Ginger. Tencel is like rayon; it is drapey, so this is a drapey chambray fabric rather than denim. If it says hand-wash (rather than dry-clean only), you can wash it in the washer on cold and hang to dry. I think it will be much better for you than cotton denim, because of the drape.

I've had Tencel items before. I think it is rayon and softer and not as sturdy as denim. I think I machine washed on delicate or hand wash and hung to dry. When the fabric is wet it feels shrunken and strange, but it will soften as it dries. It may require some ironing or steaming but that should be easy for an a-line style. It will probably shrink in the dryer.
That said, I can see you in this skirt.

Years ago I had a tencel jumper. I think tencel is wood pulp or something. Anyway, I washed it in the machine and hung it to dry. When it was wet it was very stiff and weird. After it dried it was very drapey, like silk. I really liked it.

I think the skirt fits into your style very well. It might not work for another person, but styling will make all the difference, and you're good at that!

Tencel is drapy and really good for a skirt like that. I think you'll really like it.

No input on the care (although I wash a lot of hand-wash items on the delicate wash cycle and hang to dry) but I think the skirt has fabulous potential for your style!

You might have to iron it a little, but you should be able to drip dry it, which is nice.

I'd be careful not to dry it in the dryer. I bet it drapes and moves nicely.

One of my favorite outfits was a shirt and baggy pants in black tencel. It had a wonderful drape and I washed in the machine and dried it on low temp. I still have it and although it's a bit faded, it looks great. It will be cooler than denim for summer.

I am a fan of tencel. I wash it on delicate in the washing machine. I hang dry. It seems to work perfectly. It will be stiff the first time you put it on, but it loosens up through the day. I will personally buy more of this fabric in the future.

Tencel feels soft and drapes nicely. All tencel items I've owned have been light weight and very nice to wear. I have been able to wash cold and hang dry. I wonder if the dye will run if you hand wash it? I think that would be my concern.

I like this for your style. I thought tencel was a washable (superior) form of rayon. I think tencel would be more drapey (less stiff) than cotton. This could be an advantage for this style.

I'm sure I have machine washed tencel garments with no special care, though we line dry everything. It's a much softer feel than denim, and as everyone else has said, it will drape nicely. I'll look forward to pics if you buy it!
