I love your shopping outfit. My favourite shorts are the first ones from Pilcro. You look great in that style—actually, you look great in all the shorts.

I really like the white J Crew shorts- and the green, but less so. As I am quite traditional with what I like I’m actually surprised how much I like the first pair on you, which looks like a skirt.
And fab shopping outfit.

The J Crew shorts are my fav of the shorts, but the outfit you were wearing is the best of all!

I got the white and green JCrew shorts, plus two other pairs that I ordered. I decided against keeping the white and green ones shown above. They have a more preppy feel than what I am really after right now. And the button fly is difficult to button. I don't mind button-fly jeans, but the metal buttons on those are a lot easier to button and un-button than these small, sewn-on buttons.
I also received the Aritzia shorts and tee that I ordered. I'm keeping the tee, but returning the shorts; they are too small, and they are shorter than what I'd like.

I am keeping a pair of JCrew shorts, the pleated Bermuda shorts in indigo stripe. (Finds still not working for me with JCrew, even when I tried in Safari.)
These shorts are quite classic, but I think something about the drape of the fabric makes them less preppy feeling. The fabric is quite thin, and although they are 100% cotton, they feel like a cotton-linen blend. I think they will probably wrinkle like crazy, but I like them.

Photos 1-6 show the new JCrew shorts styled a few different ways.
1-2: with an asymmetric linen top with decorative stitching (made by me)
3: with a bandana-print silk tank (made by me)
4-6: with a striated floral print tee (made by me) & narrow stripe, short linen blazer (Eileen Fisher). 6 is to give a close-up of the stripes, but the stripe in the shorts doesn't show up at all.

Photos 7-8 show the Aritzia gray tee and shorts, alone and with a floral denim jacket (made by me), which I hoped to wear with them. I will wear the tee with the jacket, even though I'm returning the shorts. After numerous efforts to find things to wear with this jacket, though, I'm beginning to think I may give up on it soon. I did recently get a pair of Athleta pants that I could wear with it, especially now that I have a tee that will go under it easily.

Yes finding the right “Goldilocks” shorts can be quite challenging. I get why you passed on the green and white shorts- especially if they have a sewn button fly. I like the look of the pair you’ve settle on, its a nice length and silhouette. My preference would be wearing it with untucked or semi tucked tops like photos 1-3.

Thanks, Dee! I agree with your picks for the tops.

I can see the stripes in the shorts in pic 6 no problem? The new indigo stripe J Crew shorts are lovely. I agree with sending back the ones with a difficult button fly! Not what you want to bother with.
I liked the grey Aritzia shorts too, but they are a bit shorter. Is that why you sent them back?
I bought some grey linen blend shorts last year (colour was called “silver birch” which I thought was a pretty name). They were just above the knee and last summer I wore them 38 times!
My legs are not as nice as yours I feel but are OK with most of the thigh covered, ha ha, so I coped with the length. Oh for the days of my lovely young legs!
Your self-made denim jacket with the flowers is really beautiful. I am sad that you don’t wear it?

Jenni, you're right. I do see the shorts stripes in pic 6. Better light where I'm sitting now with my laptop, I guess. Your just-above-the-knee shorts sound great, with 38 wears. The right shorts can be very comfortable in summer, and I agree the length is so key to that comfort (what part of the leg we want to expose, as you describe). The Aritzia shorts weren't as long as I was hoping for.
I really like the jacket, too. Sometimes this happens with things I make--my plans for what I'll wear them with don't always work out. If I hang on to them long enough, eventually I find wardrobe mates for some of them.

OMG, I am jealous of your silver summer footwear collection. Never mind the shorts!

I like the J. Crew shorts you've chosen to keep. They look good -- a nice way to dip your toe into the trend and easy to style. Fun print mix in 5/6 even if we can't entirely see it -- I get the idea! Right up my alley.

I concur with your decision about the Aritzia shorts. Not what you had in mind.

You look fab in the long shorts trend!

Ha, Suz! The silver shoes are a shared taste!
