A color that always tempts you, but...

Is there a color that always attracts your eye, that you find so beautiful and appealing, but when you try to wear it, it just doesn’t work?

For me, it’s this color. This tangerine or melon shade is one of my favorites to look at, but I look pretty awful in it. Something about it gets me every time, but I have to enjoy it on others.

That is a lovely color, indeed. Perhaps wear it in accessories and/or prints with your good colors? That is what I try to do. For me, rust plays such a role, and it is everywhere these days. I wear the few pieces I have with lots of blues.

Tanya, I like rust too! I do wear it, but usually in prints or as an accent. I don’t see this tangerine color a lot in accessories, but that’s a good idea.

Carla, I remember reading somewhere that there is a blush for everyone, but if that’s true, I have not found mine. It always makes me look washed out and drained. I’ve given up on blush! So I can relate for sure.

Teal or emerald green - both are too strong for me. Softer colors like aqua or pale blue would do wonders for my skin ( would do some elements of strong/intense colors in accessories like earrings ).

Interesting, again!! Hm... I'm very drawn to shiny metallics, patent leather and leopard print, if that counts. I have this idea that it will look rock n roll-chic on me. It does not.

I remembered that I have the opposite issue. I always get tons of compliments when I wear a burgundy color, but it is not my favorite and it never last long in my wardrobe. Do you have the color that looks great on you, but it is not your favorite?

Lilac is a color I have always loved. I wore it in my 20s, was not a great color for me then and even less now. I wore it with forest green, black, white, navy- a truly versatile color. I have a summer cashmere sweater in pale pinkish lilac, almost in the territory of unflattering but I don’t really care.

I adore peach/melon but it’s definitely not my best.
Also, orange - basic saturated orange that looks good with dark denim. Bad colour on me (but something like blush is worse, so not the worst possible colour).

I will not categorically say no to either of these colours though.

For me, the big one right now is all the tan/beige/camel shades that Synne wears so effortlessly. Colours that look like a perfectly creamy cafe au lait on the hanger turn all kinds of weird yellow-brown and green-brown when I put them on. More lentil than latte!

And you can count me into the "can't figure out blush" club with Runcarla. I've never found a version that looks good on me.

Another one: I love the look of deep saturated blues (cobalt, lapis, ultramarine), but have learned the hard way that I don't really enjoy wearing them. I should send them all your way, Janet!

Fuchsia and shocking pink are colors I love but they are both too strong for my skin tone and ultimately wear me. Possibly, I could pull off both if they were in a pattern with more complementary colors..

Anchie, my version of that reverse syndrome is probably fuchsia or magenta, or maybe saturated purple. They look good on me but somehow rarely find their way into my wardrobe, and when they do, they don’t stay very long.

Blush for sure. I’m always attracted and have purchased and returned or donated a few tops. I still have one sweater which I haven’t been able to part with because it’s so soft and delish. But every time I wear it and catch a glimpse of myself I look like death. Lol

Pale or baby blue makes me look sick. Anytime the color is next to my skin, I look like death warmed over. Because this has been the case for as long as I remember, I have a poison eye for the color, generally - it doesn't appeal to me in clothing or objects or anything else.

Every once in a while, I will see someone else wearing the color and it looks beautiful on them, and I remind myself that the color itself isn't bad; it's just bad on ME!

I am irresistibly attracted to what I call the family of mouth-puckering yellow-greens. They are not my most flattering colors by a long shot, so I tend to temper my passion for them by buying them in accessories. My latest happy acquisition was a cropped color-blocked cardigan this past winter in which a searing citron was one of the trio of colors. The two other colors were cream and a cool gray.

White - optic or pure white! I like it but it rarely works on me with the exception of shoes. Even in a print that white with a blue undertone looks harsh - and as I get older it is getting worse.

Lilac and jade/mint are colours that do work on me but I rarely am drawn to. I do associate both with 80s fashion. I am more confident now about how to style them my way to make them not too preppy.....

Janet - I do think a bag in this colour could be fun on you? I also think it is okay to say I love this but not for me.

I find pastels challenging too — I can do a mint or seafoam green or light blue, but too pale or too muted can be not my best.

Angie, it’s been a long time since I even tried on this color, but I think it would take such careful styling it is probably not worth it. If I found a good print with tangerine/melon and other more flattering colors, that would probably be my best approach.

I did try on a coral Lilla P tee the other day, and I think that can work better on me — I find shades that lean towards red rather than yellow are more flattering to my skintone.
