52 scarves!

I just finished straightening up my closet and putting away some stray stuff from around the house. Just for fun I counted up my scarves, and I have at least 52, although I might be forgetting about some that are lurking elsewhere. Eeep! Really, this is too much, especially since none of them are particularly special or fancy. Well, the ones that were gifts are nicer than those I bought for myself, but we're not talking vintage Hermes or anything like that.

Since moving to the UK I have found that I wear a scarf almost every day, but I still think this is way too many. I'm not sure where to start with paring them down, though. I guess it will have to be a case of seeing which colors don't really fit with my wardrobe, choosing between the similar items, and ditching the ones that are getting a bit ratty.

I have a few for outdoors. Otherwise I think I have 5. But I am not a scarf lover. I bet you will have competition here!

Wow. I'm on Una's team. Maybe 3 or 4 knitted scarves for out in the snow and only 2 decorative lightweight ones. I have about as many purses. Just not my thing. Guess I can be glad I'm saving some $$$

I think I probably have at least that many - maybe 20 winter weight pashima type deals, another 20 lighterweight summer scarves, and still another 20 smaller hair scarves. I confess, this does not seem excessive, and I intend to buy more.

I have around a dozen plus 2 or 3 woollen ones just for walking. Some that I don't wear but love I attach to hand-bags to amp-up a plain outfit, or just admire in my closet.

And I wear them and love them - a lot.

Funnily, the one scarf I don't have is red one. Solid, non-patterned, long, but square one would do too - I have absolutely no idea why it's so hard to find one that fits those requirements. Maybe because I want the right one.

And speaking of Hermes, if the budget would allow it they finally have the collection of scarves I could choose one for myself from... ah well...

ETA: Oh, and I had recently touched the real pashmina. My classmate on the language course, a girl from India, had it. I am smitten - now I know what the fuss is about when it comes to pashminas.

The current count stands at 21 fashion scarves plus three more cold weather scarves that I wear with coats. I intend to keep buying more, and I won't stop until I've filled all the wholes on my scarf organizers (see pic). Scarves and handbags are two things I can't seem to get enough of

I haven't counted, but I'd guess maybe 20 or 30 for me. My theory is that they're so easy to buy because you get all the pretty patterns and fabrics of clothing, but with no size/fit issues, and they don't take up much space.

I just counted, and I have you beat by one -- 53 not counting any that may be lurking somewhere other than my scarf drawers!

I haven't been wearing them as much this year as I did in the past couple of years, but since I have room to store them I don't feel like I have too many. I feel like it's nice to have a big selection!

I am just beginning my collection. I have three silk scarves I purchased myself and I just gifted two more from Sona that she brought back from her trip to India. Total 5 (proudly said).

I haven't counted but am sure I am nearing your number and I am not at all worried about it. I love them and wear them often. No apologies from this self described scarf addict!!!

If you wear one every day, that doesn't seem like too many to me. I have only one silk square scarf, and a cashmere pashmina. I wouldn't mind having more, but I can't find any I like enough (that are inexpensive enough) to add.

Just counted...20. But that includes 3 that were gifts that I'm not wild about but can't pass on just yet!

I would definitely buy more...I'm always on the lookout. They are one of the reasons I don't aspire to a minimalist style, as we are discussing over on that thread.

If you like all 52 I see no reason to get rid of them just based on a number. Only the ones you don't like or are looking too worn.

I have three outerwear scarves and four fashion scarves. But I wish I had more fashion scarves! I am very picky about fabric and style and have a hard time finding stuff I like.

Around 25(maybe30) here, but didn't count. Don't wear them everyday, but I need them all, as they are well color coordinated with most of my outfits:-)

I probably have about 40, and wear them all. They take little space and are easy to spot the way I keep them (arranged by color on a special IKEA hanger). For me, scarves are compulsory in winter and very fun to style in spring. My mom has hundreds

I have around 10-12, but only wear about half of them right now. Some of them are an odd shape of length and I cannot figure out how to tie them so they sit. Others I've worn often in past seasons and am just taking a break from them.

I have probably over 100 silk scarves and about 10 cashmere mufflers for winter. I keep the silks sorted by ground color, ie do they go with navy or black, and put the really seasonal ones away in their off season. I've collected them for years. It sounds like EveningMood and I are of like mind! They don't take up much room and I may not use one for a year or two, but I wouldn't give any away, if I were you.

I have four - black & white stripes, snow leopard, orange/red, and one my SIL knitted for me that I would never wear (but never throw out).

I only wear them in winter, for warmth, though.

If you feel like purging, why not start with the ones that are too ratty to wear?

I have a LOT of scarves and when I have a moment will actually count, and sort them.

I like long, rather than "square" scarves, but have quite a few of the latter that are really beautiful, including one genuine Chanel!

I have a soft spot for velvety scarves, including the ones with "burnt-out" patterns. These are expensive but I have been lucky enough to find some in charity(thrift) shops.

I wear a lot of black and white so a self-coloured long scarf adds the little bit of colour I like.

I just culled a few of mine because I realized that I wasn't wearing them. I was more into scarves a few years ago, but I suspect that I'll come back around eventually. I've got an ikea scarf holder full - I think somewhere in the 20 range. All of mine are the long skinny type, no squares as that's not my style.

I don't think 52 is that much if you honestly wear one everyday. I'd assess if any of them are ratty or that you only wear when your favorites are in the wash. Maybe keep track for a month or so with which ones you wear and now much? Then you can make an educated decision about culling.

My collection is at 20 scarves now, and I wear one every day for at least 11 months of the year. I've added several this last year and there's no stopping now, I think I've become an addict

Do you consider purging because some of the scarves don't appeal to you anymore, or do you feel that the sheer number is intimidating?

I did a big purge a few months ago. Excluding a rainbow of pashmina shawls now in storage, I think we're looking at 6.

I've got two big, heavy yarn scarves - one in mint, one in burgundy.

Lighter, woven scarves - one pale, essentially white one; one dark, patterned with orange/white; one blue/lilac fringed one (because it seems to come in handy); and one black thistle & skulls scarf.

There may also be another one that I kept, that I consider a "summer scarf". It makes me think of strawberries and is red, white, and blue - and involves a pom-pom fringe. I'm off of fringe, tho, so I'm not sure...

I think it's just that I realized how crowded the rack that I keep my scarves on actually is once I put them all away. Many of my scarves are big and bulky so they are a bit overwhelming. Almost all of them are inexpensive "fast fashion" viscose, or the kind of pashmina you can buy 3 for £5 in the tourist trap bits of London. So nothing fancy if I decide to just pitch them all into the textile recycling bin.

I think the other aspect is that I'm kind of bored with some of them or never have worn them much. I'd like to replace them with something else but there are so many already that this feels silly. Just a matter of realizing I have too much stuff still, I suppose!

I like the infinity trend more than I like having to tie a scarf. I've hardly been wearing my long scarves at all and have purged a number of them.

Then I see someone on the street in a leather jacket with scarf -- looking so cool -- and go, "What was I thinking?"

I'm at work so can't count but I think I have 20-30. I don't think it's too many since I wear them quite often. I also don't aspire to a minimalist style and enjoy the extra color and pattern a scarf brings to an outfit.

Since you say you wear them every day, it doesn't sound like you have too many. I guess I would get rid of the ones you don't wear and then you'll have room for replacements that you like better. I get lots of my scarves from thrift shops because they are so cheap there.
